The answer is found in ancient history as well as post-World
War II history.
Trieste is located at the southern end of the so-called “Iron north
Curtain” which stretches to Stettin on the Baltic. It is a controversial spot where now AngloAmerican and Yugoslav troops face each other across only a thinly drawn line on a map. 1t is potentjally the biggest keg of dynamite in Europe and comparable as a trouble spot to Danzig after the last war.
Trieste in Roman Days
The history of Trieste dates back to Roman times when it
. {was part of the Roman Empire.
From 918 to 1202 it maintained an independent existence until captured by the city-state of Venice. For nearly two centures it remained associated with Venice but finally in 1382 came under the protection of Leopold III of Austria. It remained part of the Austrian Empire until 1918 when the World War I peace treaties gave it to Italy. Italian feeling predominated in Trieste even under Austrian rule. Its port workers and shipbuilders were primarily Italian. Trieste, which for years had been a flourishing porf, 40st much of its business under the early sears" of Ialiad rule. But under the impetus of Fascist expansion its port and shipbuilding facilities were quickly rebuilt in the 1930's.

ships were built in Trieste and in the neighboring city of Monfalcone. The city also had a Ford assembly plant, iron and steel mills, textile plants and petroleum refineries. But World War II brought destruction to much of that. The city of Trieste is overwhelmingly Italian. But its suburbs and hinterland is predominantly Slav. That was why it was difficult to find a post-World War II settlement. The- Yugoslavs wanted the city and so did the Italians. The United States always wanted the city to go to Italy. So last week the United States, Britain and France joined in proposing to amend the Italian treaty and return Trieste to Italy. The Trieste: area is small, and Italians there have used an American comic strip for a nickname, They call it “Topolino,” meaning “Micky Mouse Land.”
