ONE OF THE TRADITIONAL POST-LENTEN

| social events in Indianapolis is the annual ball sponsored

by St. Vincent's Hospital Guild. This year’s dance, Apr. 3 in the Indianapolis Athletic Club, will be a “Blossom Time Ball.” Proceeds, as in past years, will be used in guild activities at the hospital.

Those activities are carried on in helping the Daughters of |

Charity at the hospital with philanthropic work in maternity and

children’s wards, and in providing equipment and supplies for these |

departments.

While the annual ball is the guild's principal source of funds |

for this purpose, its work goes on through other months of the year. Formed 15 years ago (Jan. 24, 1933) with only 22 members, the non-sectarian group now counts almost 400 women ‘on its membership roster. Each of these has a part in guild work. The

| whole body has an all-day meeting on the first Monday of each

month, in the Nurses’ Home at the hospital. » ” » - n ” One group in the guild, the nursery and maternity sewing committee, meets each week. Working even through the torrid months of last summer, the group rolled up a total for the year of 6035 completed articles. Mrs. I. M. Cole, committee chairman, is shown with five of her co-workers in the photo at upper left. Another committee makes complete layets and other articles for babies whose mothers have been unable to provide such outfits for them. Among the members of this committee, which is headed by Mrs. Marguerite Hennessey, are Mrs. Cecil Bevis and Mrs. Max Patton (lower left photo). Last year this group completed 79 articles and gave 12 layets to mothers leaving the hospital.

Mrs. John R. Kelley Is Co-Chairman

| For the 'Blossom Time Ball’

The diversional committee (members of this group appear in the photo at upper right) sees to it that holidays are made brighter for patients who must spend thoge days abed. Mrs. John R. Kelley, who also is one of the co-chairmen for ‘this year’s Blossom Time Ball, is head of the group. Serving in the same capacity last year, she reported that her committee had finished 180 articles for holidays; madé 20 scrapbooks; trimmed three Christmas trees for the children’s ward and bought and wrapped 40 gifts Tor the children. Another phase of the guild's activity is the Gift Shop con-

| ducted at the hospital. Miss Elizabeth Sowar is in charge of the

committee staifing the shop where visitors, patients and hospital personnel may buy gifts. Also directly concerned with the shop is

| the gift shop sewing committee with Mrs. Clara Slattery as chair- | man. This group's record last year was the completion of 396 | articles and supervision of the dressing of 19 dolls at Christmas time. The center photo shows two of the guild members and a |

hospital nurse in the gift shop.

Ld = = » - ~ In addition to these groups, there is a surgical dressings committee for which Mrs. George Knue is the chairman. Its work last year added up to completion of 14,127 dressings. Then there is the welfare committee, with Mrs. Robert Boyle as chairman, which

| investigates cases requiring hospitalization and helps the persons

get needed care. Mrs. John F. Darmody heads the purchasing committee which rounds up materials needed in guild work . . . such things as blankets and wash cloths and yards of muslin by the hundreds; diapers by the thousands. Other committees and their chairmen are: Membership—Mrs. Frank C. Otte; endowment—Mrs. Laura G. Cummins; publicity— Mrs. C. F, Farrar, and visiting ladies, Mrs. Robert Imes. Duties of the latter group include pinch hitting as personal representatives

| for out-of-town patients who may have no relatives here to run

errands, answer letters or make ‘phone calls for them. Guild members also pitch in at the monthly meetings to help prepare and serve luncheons for fellow members. Mrs. Ralph Ittenbach and Mrs. Hugh V. Brady (lower photo) are shown dishing up a luncheon for guild members. Mrs. William C. Kennedy is standing chairman for the luncheons, and each month designates the luncheon chairman and assisting committee for the day's meeting.
