A Woman's Purse

Bartoh Rees Pogue

Beyond the fun of comedienne, More laughable far than the comic men, Nothing so old and yet so diverse As a woman deep in her cavernous purse!

With a line behind her, unhappy to wait,

vast estate,

She stores some papers under her wing, Into her mouth goes that compact thing;

left hand

Hold many items of contraband:

She gives the driver a package or two,

She may stop to hunt right Oh, this is real life,

When she can not find her Freeze at some door while

Out of the purse she is pawing through, And all the while, "twixt dives she makes, She smiles so sweetly and mumbles, “My sakes!” At last the fare, after all that fuss, She should have found while she prayed for the bus!

In the shuffle and clicking from thousands of feet: this isn’t burlesque! Her kind abounds at the cashier's desk; In the stores she becomes a little irate

But fruitlessly, for the truant pass key; In every instance she knows it’s there, Somewhere in the pounds her purse must bear. If a place is handy the cargo is dumped . . . Eureka! Eureka! She never is stumped!
