: ah A ‘Believed to Have 25 of Newest German Boats; U.S. Has Only 80 Undersea Craft in Shape

force afloat.

The Soviet surface fleet is negligible in comparison with Amer-

fca’s, which is the greatest in the 10 per cent of its war-time peak. Whether the Russians did scuttle .or break up other boats falling into their hands is not known.

Take Over Shipyards

They did, however, take over) four German submarine ship-| yards and several plants making] U-boat parts. They also have] some 400 German ship-building technicians suppgsedly at work on subs. Therefore, Russia is believed here to have close to 25 of the latest type German boa equipped with the Schnorkle breathing device, and with newest type German engines which have increased submerged speed. By comparison, the United States has 80 submarines in commission and 100 in reserve.’ In a reconversion program under way, a number of our subs are being Bchnorkle-equipped and otherwise streamlined for faster underwater speed. Russia's submarines are scgttered through at least four bases. These are in the Black Sea, the Arctic Ocean, the North Pacific, and the Baltic,

Range Far Afield

With Siberian bases and possibly some on the Kamchatka , Feninsula, the Russians could range far afield in the Pacific. They now control Yugoslavia for bases there. Should Greece and Italy go Communist, Russia's sea and submarine factor could be immensely increased in the Mediterranean.
