Tribesters before the curtain goes Al Lopez up on the American Association's 1948 season. . . . Sullivan gave Victoria a big hand for its training facilities and the hospitality of the townspeople. . . . He addressed five luncheon clubs there in one week and was impressed by Victoria's enthusiasm for league baseball. . . . When the Indians and the St. Paul Saints meet in an éxhibition game Saturday it will be the first tiit between leaguers played in Victoria since 1922, when the New York Ciants and Omaha clashed. . . . Count it up, 26 years ago. ... As a matter of fact, Victoria, in south Texas, virtually is virgin territory for league pastimers.... Sullivan said Manager Al Lopez is pleased with the camp setup and also with the early conditioning of the veterans and the youngsters under his wing. . . . Sullivan described the Tribe's new skipper as a tireless worker, which only can mean that players making the team will have to keep hustling. 5 =» ' HE CHOOSES BASKETBALL .. . Ernie Andres, the Indianapolis Indians’ 1947 third sacker, is not likely to get in any training in the South. , . . It is said his basketball contract with the local Kautskys’ pro basketball team ties him ‘up ‘through April 11 . . . and the Indians will be home on April 18. ., . . They will depart Victoria on Mar. 28 and “play their way North” in stops at Southern Association cities.
7 o » IT'S IN BUSH'S LAP ... The guess is that the Andres’ problem will be turned over to Tribe President Ownie Bush to dispose of as he chooses. . . . However, similar conditions prevailed st spring and the third sacker was
to join the Indians
permitted after they returned from the
South. . . , But in the event that
Manager Lopez turns up with another capable third baseman, look for Andres to be sent elsewhere. « «+ This is a different year and a different manager.
2 ” ” SEND HIM ALONG... Stan Rojek and Pete Castiglione are running a close race for the shortstop assignment with the Pirates, says the news from the Pittsburgh spring camp in Hollywood, Cal. . . . However, Castiglione is believed not to be quite ready for the big show and is expected to be returned to the Indianapolis Indians for another year of Triple-A seasoning.
” » ~ PASTEBOARD BUSINESS . .. There's a “double” brisk ticket sale under way at the Victory Field offices. . . . In addition to dishing out ducats for the Indians' American Association opener against the Kansas City Blues on the night of April 15, the office staff also is receiving daily orders for the Indians’ exhibition
Yankees here dn the afternoon of April 14,
” ”n ” FIVE YEARS, TWO HOMERS . .». In five seasons in the major leagues, Dick Culler, shortstop, hit only two home runs. ... He saw service with the White Sox, Athletics and Braves, . . . Now he’s with the Cubs. . . . Evidently Culler never mastered the trick of hitting the rabbit ball on its rubber nose.
” o o ON THE ICE... The Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League are on the threshhold of garnering several individual achievements. . . . Harry Lumley as the “stingiest” goalie, Tommy Ivan. as big league doach-of-the-year, and Jim McFadden as rookie-of-the-year. . . . Ivan coached the Indianapolis Caps last season and Lumley is a former Hoosier Cap net minder.
” o ” RING INVESTMENTS ... Jersey Joe Walcott’'s purchases since last December's bout with Joe Louis include a new car (the big-money type),r three houses and furnishings for them, and he also banked a big roll as a fund for the education of his six children. . . . The heavyweight title challenger is showing good judgment in the distribution of his sudden wealth.

Considering UCLA Offer
- College Scores
COLUMBUS, O,, March 11 (UP)—William H. (Tippy) Dye, head Ohio State University basketball coach, said today he was considering an offer to coach at the University of California at Los Angeles. Dye will discuss the matter further when he meets Wilbur Johns, UCLA athletic director, at the National Basketball Coaches Association convention in New| += De York City March 21-22. 4 The vacancy was created retently when. Johns moved up|! from head basketball coach into the athletic directorship. When contacted by reporters concerning the offer, Dye said he was “certainly going to consider it.” He added that he had also discussed the matter with Richard C. Larkins, Ohio State athletic director. : It was understood here that the Bruins had made Dye an “attrac-| tive offer.” Johns approached him while he and his Buckeye basketball squad were on the West Coast during the Christmas holidays in 1946, Dye said. Dye succeeded Harold G. Olsen as head basketball coach for the 1946-47 season. His team only won’ seven out of 20 games that season, but this season, his allsophomore five won 10 out of 20, including a victory over Michigan, Western Conference champions.

Sheboygan Loses
If the Kautskys can find the net tonight as they have done against Minneapolis and Anderson in the last two home games, Arnie and company are apt to have a hard time. The next three games are likely to tell the tale for the Kautskys —whether they are in or out pf the money. Each loss by Sheboygan is an Indianapolis gain, and the Redskins have a tough closing schedule. Sheboygan is holding the last playoff spot in the Western Division with a one-gime lead over Kautskys. The third-place Ft. Wayne Zollner Pistons gained half a game on the idle leaders of the Eastern Division of the league last night by defeating Sheboygan, 62 to 53, at Ft. Wayne. |

Barons Unbeaten In Last 22 Games
By United Press American Hockey League teams today had only five chances left to stop the Cleveland Barops, unbeaten in their last 22 games, The Barons, disregarding the “law of averages,” racked up number 22 in grand style, smothering the Philadelphia Rockets last night, 11 to 0. The victory, which tied an American League shutout record, moved the highflying Barons into a comfortable eight-point lead over idle Buffalo. In other games played last night, Springfield swamped Providence, 10 to 6, and Hershey managed a 3-3 tie with St. Louis. The Barons started slowly in their game at Philadelphia, scoring only two goals in the first period. They gave Philadelphia Goalie, Paul Corteau, a merciless pounding with five in the second and four in the last period. Roy Kelly, Johnny Holota and Roger Gagne scored two goals to lead the parade.
