So , Only Sure, Safe Way to Remove Soot From Chimneys Is by Hand
Comes
By HUBBARD COBB, Your Handy Man the day when Mr. Where-Am-1-Going-to-Get-The-Money-to-Pay-the-Interest-on-the-Mortgage
J. Homeowner decides that the
tool shed or other small out building needs a new roof. low there are any number of different materials you can use for roofing but if you are short of money, time and skill then we sug-
gest roll roofing. This material comes in a roll (hence the name) that will cover around 100 square feet. It is graded by weight and a 65 pound roll is good for average jobs. There are lighter weight roofings which are not so good and heavier types which are better—just in case you are interested. Practically anyone can lay this material on a small roof and do a nice looking as well as watertight Job. Included in the roll is a package of rust proof nails and a can| of cement to smear along the seams sa they will be tight.
\ A simple way to lay this roofing is to start at the eaves and work up. Leave about three or four inch lap between each section. If you like to be tidy, do a little measuring befor you start work so that you get the same amount of lap on each strip of roofing.
lay a strip along the ridge so that it overlaps the rooffing on each side. . You may find it easier to cut the necessary lengths of roofing on the ground rather than fooling around with the heavy roll while you do a balancing act on the roof. Another point; when you start nailing, start at the middle and work out to the ends.
Best Way to Remove Soot Is by Hand
We will be the first to agree that there are a lot more vital subjects to talk about these days than soot. On the other hand, you can't do much about the weather or taxes but you can do something about the soot in

Use Aluminum Paint
For Moisture in Walls
This, so help us, is our last and final word on the subject of condensation on or about walls for the season of 1947-48.
Today our little topic of conversation is the water vapor INSIDE the wall or between the inner and outer wall surfaces— what it may do and what can be done to stop it. g As we have mentioned from time to time, water vapor is a gas and can pass through solids like plaster, wood and even insulation. Now, just for the sake of my job, let's assume that some water vapor goes through an insulated wall and strikes the cold outer wall, The vapor condenses into a

Anyway, this is a hard way of getting around to the subject of locks and latches for windows which, if left unlocked, present an inviting entrance for anyone interested in entering your home. Many windows are equipped with latches, but usually these stopped working after about- the sixth coat of paint. If you take a knife or steel wool and remove some of this coating and then apply a drop of oil, the latch will probably work okay.
of the motors about the home are fraction~1 jobs—1/6, % and 2» horsepower, and therefore require a lot less current than heating appliance such as toasters and irons. Adding to our collection of ways and means to attach screws to plaster walls for the purpose of hanging objects, a reader out in Michigan suggests, making a small hole through the plaster, filling it with plastic wood and | then inserting a screw-eye into!
dL LRT:
The only hitch with most window latches is that you have to| remember to close them, there-| fore we suggest for the absent-| minded, spring loaded latches, which - wl lock automatically when the windows are closed. Needless to say, all windows and this includes those in the basement, should be provided with some kind of latch, - If you don’t like housebreakers disturbing your sleep, you can fit the windows in the bedroom with special little devices that allow the window to be opened part way for ventilation, but not enough to allow even a small bur-
