Delegates in 9.Man Race

Off to Better Start Than During 1944

Bv LYLE C. WILSON United Press Staff Correspendent WASHINGTON, Mar. 10—Gov. mas E. Dewey's political punch nearly belted Harold E. gtassen out of the ring in their first state presidential primary contest. Gov. Dewey won six of New Hampshire's eight delegates to the Republican National Convention on the basis of nearly complete returns from yesterday's primary. It was a two-man contest. By winning only two New Hampshire delegates, Mr. Stassen has suffered a sharp setback in his campaign for the Repub-| lican presidential nomination. But Gov. Dewey, with six delegates, is off to a better start toward the nomination this time than in 1944 when a New Hampshire victory also started his band wagon rolling. Mr. Stassen had not been expected to lick Gov. Dewey in New Hampshire. But if the former Minnesota governor had so much as divided the delegate slate eveniy, Mr. Dewey's candidacy would have been hard hit. The size-up in New Hampshire was that Mr, Stassen had to take at least three of the state’s eight delegates to prove himself a strong contender in the Northeast. The New Hampshire victory falls perfectly into the pattern of Dewey strategy just when his pre-convention campaign badly needed a shot in the arm. The New Yorker plans to make primaries in New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Oregon the show cases of his pre-convention cam-

paign. To do so be must gain decisive victories in all three states.

In Wisconsin on Apr. 6 he will be opposed again by Mr, Stassen and by Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

Paul Berger, spokesman for the group, said veterans here and in other cities had been contacted and the “plan is snowballing.” He said “at least 500 former servicemen” had pledged their support within a few hours after the veterans established the organization which will be known as “Veterans Against MacArthur.” Cites General's Record Mr, Berger said the group opposed MacArthur because “of his general aloofness from the people, his use of violence in 1932 to halt the veterans’ march in Washington, his censorship of the press in Japan, and the evidence this gives of his antidemocratic leanings.” He said the VAM “stands for
