‘Natural’—Officials for Meets Are Announced

By BOB STRANAHAN

Politicians, who always are pausing to “look at the record,” would have a field day with the statistics of th to Indianapolis next. Saturday for the semifin At first glance, Lawrenceburg, with a r and a single defeat, would look like a “shoo-in.” But wait, there's | more than meets the eye. Namel

Anderson. Granted that Coach Bud Bateman has a worthy representative from Lawrenceburg to be the only returning team to the local semifinal meet. The Tigers finally wound up with a vote of confidence from a lot of sports writers, who picked them as co-favorites with Evansville Central to win the 1948 championship. And a lot of nice things have been written about Lawrenceburg’s polished play. Champs Nipped Cubs But the Madison mark, even with its three setbacks, is more imposing than that of Lawrenceburg since the Cubs seem to have met stiffer opposition. One of the Madison defeats was by three points to Lawrencéburg in the fourth game of the season. This one the Cubs avenged very neatly in the season's finale when they shattered Lawrenceburg's long winning streak, : The other two losses were to Shelbyville and to Franklin. The state champs nipped the Cubs by a point in a game which could Just as easily have turned out the other way. Franklin's Grizzly Cubs won by a threepoint margin later in the season. The oddsmakers figure that Madison will defeat Anderson in the opener on Saturday and that Lawrenceburg will get past Crawfordsville in the nightcap. That would throw the two Southeastern Indiana rivals into the title game at night and would be a “natural,” if there ever was one. Tourney Tradition Anderson, in spite of the won 15-lost 10 record of the Indians, cannot be discounted. Coach Keith Lambert's team got by a fine Washington team in the reglonal here after an uphill fight with Greenfield. The Indians
