PEOPLE SAY High Dollar Davy is nuts bouncing Mr. Maurer doesn’t care what
Ine ne as tat hoep
For, indefatigable automobile dealer and junk man } on buying more and more auto-
He Siva refers to buying, rather than selling. One is allowed the inference that the 200-odd cars he buys each month are not all junked, especially the many 1947 and 1948 models he acquires. This is all a part of the 28-year-old supersalesman’s eccentricity. He shies from use of the word success or any reference to that much-sought
“I'm not superstitious,” he declared. He turned on the old Maurer “con,” the persuasion he has translated into so many high dollars. “But, I just don’t like the word. Sure, I'm making a living and getting a few of the things I've always wanted.” Dave’s not such a screwball, when he stands still a moment and unfolds his philosophy. “Be on the ball and be alert, that's the way I believe in operating,” the balding merchant asserted. About his business, he opined: “My cars are no better than anyone else's; but, no one else's are any better than mine, either. I never tell anyone my cars are guaranteed. That doesn't mean anything. I think of making .a satisfied customer.” Interviewing “just plain Davy” as he calls himself is no small assignment. First, one must catch him, It's a fast pace he sets for his 18 employees, including his inseparable. “brother, buddy and affiliate partner,” Julius, 29. Telephones jangle, someone wants to know what High Dollar will pay for this car, another. person asks where he should sign the title and an employee yells that the battery is dead on that old car Davy just bought. It's a madhouse, where only High Dollar and those he has conditioned to thie never-ending excitement can exist.
Words P..: Personality
ONE GETS the impression that the bubbling Mr. Maurer must talk in his sleep; he talks unceasingly when awake. And, his words are loaded with personality plus. He's the acme of what personnel counselors call the “sales type.” When making a point, which is what he is usually doing, he keeps repeating, “Do you follow my thinking?” The listener finds himself doing just that.

One serious moment found young David
(there’s that word) he has had. One finds it hard to believe that the robust dynamo ever was bedfast sapping disease. But, he was. He lay quiet one year at Sunnyside, while his sick lung healed. It was 1935, a few months after he and Julius— | “leave me out of this”--started their present business. Day and night the two brothers worked to make a go of it and help their widowed mpther and five brothers and sisters. Dave fell {ll from| the strain. Oddly enough, Dr. James Stygall, who treated] young Maurer, now is a stockholder in another| Maurer firm, Moneys, Inc. A friendship grew! from the chance meeting.

High Dollar misses his education. “But, I can count,” he laughed. No one who| has seen him perform could possibly doubt this

If the lawmakers will pardon me for ignoring their inquiry into how the gangster-extortion-ists managed to flee the federal clink, I'd like to tell a hair-rais-ing (my hair) tale of the long ago. I was a cub reporter in Chicago . . . and a pretty important fellow. Scarface Al and I were on speaking terms. I knew Big Bill Thompson. The City Judge, who ran a burlesque show on the side, was a pal of mine. So I used to swagger around the Loop, calling cops and gangsters by ee ____|their first names, and in general acting like an exceedingly stupid young man. » » n ONE OF my favorite hangouts was known widely as the biggest speakeasy in the world. Scarfr.ce owned it, one of his sub-lieu-tenants named Hatchet Murphy ran it, and there I paid 75 cents a bottle for a fluid the bartender sald was beer. It usually had a little straw floating in the bottom; the foam was a greenish hue and nobody lever knew, from batch to batch,

The Hatchet had to take steps. “He hates to do it, you being a customer and all,” said Joe, “but he’s gotta teach you a lesson. - He says to tell you he's gonna have your arms and legs busted.” The phone clicked.
