| Crossroads Therapy Staff Rebuilds
By JEAN TABBERT “NO PATIENT is turned away at Crossroads.” That's the way Marian Eiden explains the busy days she spends at the Rehabilitation Center at 3001 N. New Jersey St. She came to Crossroads Aug. 1, 1946, as director of physical therapy. Confronted with a dingy, two-room suite that was to be her clinic, Miss Eiden didn't wait long to change that state of affairs. Hospital white equipment and spanking clean linens are the rule now, The sun streams through the windows and shines against whitewashed walls. Since she’s the only member of the staff, she sees that those rooms stay bright and shining. “It would be a help to have an assistant.” says Miss Eiden. “I'm treating 45 patients now, most of them two or three times a week.” “That's quite different from the way the clinic began. There wasn't a single person on the books then.” The very existence of the “books” is the result of the generosity of Marion County citizens. Through the annua! Easter Seal drive now being held, contributions are made directly to the non-profit Marion County Society for the Crippled. The private organization turns over the money collected to Crossroads. This revenue, in addition to individual donations and a small membership drive, supports the institution. The lavender seals therefore pay the postage to health for many a handicapped child. * The qvercrowded condition of her appointment book doesn't faze Marian Eiden though. It simply means she must step up her faster-than-average pace. Since har office is an out-patient arrangement, she sees all those patients on an appointment basis. They're transported to and from the office in a station wagon provided by Crossroads. Office hours are from 8:30 a. m. to 4:30 p. m. Monday through Friday. It's one of Marian Eiden's weaknesses—she admits it— to like “Saturdays off.” She's not getting much opportunity to indulge that fancy these days, however. Besides the lapping over of her appointments to Saturdays, Miss Eiden adjusts her own schedule to fit her patients’ extra-curricular activities. ’ For instance, she thinks baseball practice sessions definitely should take precedence over therapy “dates.” So the appointment is scheduled on Saturday, along with others that have been postponed for a variety of reasons. Many of her older patients want to learn how to handle themselves at trades or occupations differing from those they knew before they were incapacitated. had to learn to walk and to sit down before he could return. Now he’s occupied at a full-time job and earning his living just as before. Entering the Army in 1943, Miss Eiden served fof three and a half years as a physical therapist, some of that time in the
. European theater. She returned to Walter Reed Hospital in Wash-
ington and left the Army as a captain, . Behind her lies a career that’s “chock full” of experience. A teacher for many years, she also was playground supervisor for the Milwaukee Recreation and Adult Education Department. (The Milwaukee outfit is one of the best in the country.) Mayo Clinic in Rochester lists her as one of their graduate registered physical therapists. “I'm particularly interested in getting as many patients to know each other as possible,” says Miss Eiden. “It keeps their morale high to be able to discuss their activities.” If that means Marian Eiden works more than her share, it doesn't seem to matter. She's getting her job done in the way she thinks it should he—with the emphasis on the recovery of the patient, not the comfort of the “staff.” Carrying through with this idea, she’s been instrumental in organizing the summer camp for the Marion County Society for the Crippled. The society rents Camp Delight, regularly the Camp Fire Girls’ spot for outdoor activities, For a week a complete camping program is carried on with a full staff of counselors on hand. Miss Eiden thinks the handie capped should learn to do things themselves. As a result, the campers make beds, set tables and engage in a heavy schedule of handicrafts. They play baseball and volleyball, although sometimes these games are played in the water. If they take place on land, the pace is walking rather than running. “We simply slow down a game so the handicapped may take advantage of the group fun all youngsters should enjoy,” says
+ Miss Eiden. ‘
She's hoping to arrange a two-week scamping period this summer, That, and the.assistant she'd like to have, plus much of the equipmen® that's needed by the center's physical therapy division, all come from money collected in the Easter Seal drive. That's the way the other divisions of the center are supported. In addition to physical therapy, there are the recreation and case work divisions, In the process of organization is a playshop for pre-school youngsters. It will be run like a nursery school, except that only crippled tots will be admitted. As Miss Eiden says, “We like to treat as many persons as we can, providing something can be done for them ... no patient is turned away.”
