Indiana Plans Southern Trip

BLOOMINGTON, Mar. 4—A 28-game Indiana University baseball schedule, starting with a southern swing into Florida, and the appointment -of Robert A. Johnson as assistant varsity coach, was announced here today by Coach Paul (Pooch) Harrell. The Hoosiers will play at ¥glin Field, Fla., Mar, 26 and 27 and at Whiting Field, near Milton, Fla, Mar. 28 and 29, on the southern trip. Indiana's nine then will play nine straight tilts at Jordan Field, including the two-game Big Nine opener with Wisconsin, before hitting the road again. Johnson, a native of La Porte, played college baseball at DePauw and had two years of professional experience in the Coastal Plains League, where he played with the 1946 loop champions, the Rocky Mount Rocks. lineup in Ralph Lollar, while two Speedway boys are over that mark-—Allan Wiecheéers and Bud Chambers. Speedway’s biggest problem, of course, will be the to double assignment of stopping Bill Niemann and Maurice Wilhoite, the goal-getting twins of the Conti~ nentals who led the local sectional in scoring last week. Konnie King, Speedway’s chief gunner, can’t quite match Nie mann’'s total for the season, but he can expect plenty of help from Wiechers and the other Spark Plug regulars. Man for man, or rather boy -for boy, Speedway probably ‘is a. more dangérous scoring combination than Washington. Both like to go fast but can play a set style if the occasion demands. They handle the ball nicely and rebound well, so regardless of the winner, the fans should see a close one when the two county rivals tangle for the right to go to the finals of a re-

year history of the IHSAA tourney.

Johnny Wilson Sets

State Scoring Mark

ELWOOD, Ind, Mar. 4 (UP) ~Johnny Wilson, sharp-shoot-ing Anderson College center, set a new all-time scoring record last night for Indiana college basketball players, as he led Anderson to an 80-45 over Wilberforce, O. Re if Wilson dropped 34 points to run his season's total to 533, 18 more than he scored last year, when he set the mark of 515. One game remains on ‘the Anderson ‘schedule. , % The six-foot one-inch sharpshooter has averaged nearly 25.9 points per game in Anders0n’'s 21 games this year.
