Kautskys Run To 1st Triumph

Break Minneapolis Victory String, 83-63 By BILL PITTMAN The Indianapolis Kautskys may never make the National Basketball League playoffs, but they have at least one feather in their collective hat, they broke the 12-game winning streak of the Minneapolis Lakers. The Kautskys found the stride they have been looking for all season last night and thumped the Lakers, 83-63. The Lakers were aided only by the 28point scoring spree held by George Mikan. | | The ice was broken by Mikan| {with a pivot shot, and the Kautskys countered by smothering the backboard with nine points before the Lakers could] tally again. Minneapolis made a good recovery, however, to trail at the first post, 15-13. Everybody in Act In the second period Bill Closs turned on the steam to net four one-handers as everybody got in the act except Fred Lewis and Jim Springer. Mikan kept the Lakers in the game with three baskets and a free throw. Indianapolis scored 21 points in the period to keep the lead at the half, 36-30. In the third period Leo Klier and Hale scored three points on a fielder and a. free toss, then Minneapolis scored eight straight points before Indianapolis tallied again. A pivat shot by Mikan and a charity toss by Jack Dwan tied up the game for the third time at 41-all. The game was again tied at 49-all, but the locals regained the lead and closed the period in front, 55-49. Kautskys’ Inning The Kautskys had their big inning in the final stanza with Bruce Hale hitting the basket from every conceivable angle except flat on his oack. Mikan added two fielders and a couple of charity tosses to bring his evening total to 28 points. Eile was second high man with Last night's game was the first time the Kautskys had beaten the Lakers in six trys, and the win brought them within two games of a tle with 8heboygan for a spot in the playoffs. Bedford-New Albany Clash Tops Regional Schedule

By KURT FREUDENTHAL, United Press Sports Writer The quirk of a tournament schedule will throw two more of southern Indiana's best basketball teams together again this week-end as Bedford and New Albany meet in the first regional tourney game at Jeffersonville. This Saturday, without any preliminaries, Bedford and New Albany will battle it out in a tournament that is hard to figure

out. They meet in an afternoon - game of a session which matches Indiana Central Loses Finale

Seymour and unheralded Mt. St. Francis in the nightcap. On the surface it appears that the winner of that big first game should be able to coast in the finale at night, but the picture is| 1nhdiana Central College closed its regular hardwood season last night with a note of sorrow, they were defeated by Eastern Illinois, 74-69, in the final minutes of the game in the University Heights

more complicated than that. First Regional Mt. St. Francis, of course, is an unknown quantity, It's not only the team’s first regional, this is the first state tournament in which it has participated and must be put down as the underdog. Seymour, the records show, was one of the few teams able to defeat the New Albany Bulldogs this year. The Owls turned the trick Jan. 2 at New Albany, winning 46-39 in what was termed an upset. Three weeks later, the

gym. Greyhound Dwight Swails scorched the cords for 13 field goals and four free throws to take high-point honors and keep his team in the game. Don Glover paced the winners with 10 fielders and four free throws, and could be credited with the win. He tossed in a field goal and a pair of charity tosses in the final sec-

McCracken Likes IU Cage Post

BLOOMINGTON, Mar. 3 (UP) —Indiana University basketball Coach Branch McCracken, considered a leading contender for the vacant athletic directorship, said today he didn’t want the job formerly held by Alvin (Bo) McMillin. : : McCracken said he prefered to remain basketball coach, a posi-tion-he has held for seven years. The university’s board of trustees was believed to have McCracken’s name under consideration, along with several others, to succeed McMillin, who resigned to become general manager of the Detroit Lions professional team. But ‘the lanky, hardwood expert said he “sincerely believe the athletic directorship shculd not be combined with the coaching of a major sport.”
