Burl Ives Preserves Lost Art
.. By HENRY BUTLER Maybe it might seem inappro‘priate to run comments on “Anna Lucasta” and Burl Ives In the same review, . But the transition is not too dificult. : ~The English had the return this
looks and sounds even better on second acquaintance, They'verp spruced and paced that show yuite a bit, or else memory fails, since last year. It's a knock-out tor intensity: and meaning. Originally conceived as a story of Polish people in Pennsylvania, the theme was adapted to the stage as a Negro play. That adaptation was a stroke of genius. For its problems are human roblems, immediately understandabe. From the start, “Anna Lucasta” gets you. Last year's veterans (Laura Bowman as Theresa, Warren Coleman as Frank) are pitching harder than ever. Jn fact, Mr. Coleman this year does even better than last year in his
nothing, wise-cracking cynic. The story concerns Anna Lucasta’s redemption by love from vagrant life, to which she had been driven by a drink-crazed father’s harsh words. Simpie enough to state in a few para-
graphs, but no description is ade-|
“quate. There's grim comedy (last night's audience laughed quite a bit) ‘and intense, embarrassingly intimate pathos in, the play. Palzful Reminder “Anna Lucasta” is the sort of play to remind you and me and all the rest of us of our ethical failures, our not-so-juvenile delinquencies, There we are, large _as life, on the stage. And we “don’t look too good. Other important lessons, if you're sensitive, you'll figure out, Burl Ives at the Murat, arrived
here with ‘wholly Inadequate publicity, also is. engaged in turning out. art, a commodity radio sponsors are highly suspicious of until it brings results. Mr. Ives preserves a lost art— the art of ballad and folk-song singing. He does that remarkable deed by being natural and likably ‘unaffected, but still more by having the courage to talk and sing calmly into the mike until the sponsors catch on. Considering the sponsors, that's no ismall achievement. For last night's audience, which should have been much Jarger, Mr. Ives made his point. He sings ballads and folk songs from many sources—not just American, but Scottish, English, Irish. He knows our folk music as few performers do. .Dramatic Musie What's more important, he knows the folk music as dramacic material, not merely as tunes with words. Mr. Ives enunciates
a sense of tragedy In those gruesome ballads of love and death. Mr. Ives knows how to get the narrative across—the main function ‘of the ballad hefore musiclans take hold of it ang make it into Wagnerian opera. Mr, [ves sings it, says it, and there it is, Faclle, pleasing voice, good clear diction plus a certain haunting quality not to be described in words, give Mr. Ives an enormous advantage gver any possible competitors. Just thinking aloud, how about getting some good music scribe from Jordan, Indiana University, DePauw or some other Hoosier school to do a symphonic arrangement of Burl Ives, tunes [or presentation with the Indianapolis Symphony? With Mr, Ives, guitar and all, a Soloist. ve a sneaking notion ft might be something bigger than thé Fred Waring or Dorsey brothers Somers, :
