Rocket Sleds Streak Faster Than Sound
MUROC AIR BASE, Cal, Jan. 13 (UP)—The Air Force announced today that rocket-powered sleds ave. streaked along a set of railroad tracks faster than a bullet, beating the airplane to the honor ‘of cracking the sonic Ww.
WE
The sleds exceeded the speed of sound—763 miles per ‘hour at sea level—considerably during the tests. Conventional type planes are literally torn to pieces by the violent turbulence of the air when they approach sonic speeds. The Air Force said the sleds ied in the speed tests here were equipped with special “slippers” that held them to the rails during their runs. The sleds were permitted | to shoot out onto the desert at the end of their fast trip because a track at least 10,000 feet long would be needed if a braking device were used to, ,stop them before leaving | the track.
