Fall Pig Crop Up, Drop Seen in Spring

Times State Service LAFAYETTE, Jan. . 6 Indiana had a slightly larger pig crop in the

fall of 1947.than .a’year ago, but

farmers indicate that 10 per cent less sows will farrow this spring than last. Purdue University announced that the pig crop last fall was estimated at 3,084,000 pigs saved as compared with 3,072,000 in 1946. The estimate of sows that will farrow this spring is 513,000. The estimated intention for the nation as a whole are 17,732,000 head, a decrease of 11 per cent from last year, 8 per cent below the 10year average and the smallest number of spring farrowings since 1938.
