Inside Indianapo “LOOKING FOR THE MANAGER?" the clerk at the new super market-at 1102 W. 16th St. asked. “No, he won't be in his office. Try over there where those fellows are unloading fruit or else back where they're carrying in shelves. Albert (AD Galyan, manager of the West Side store that shot up practically overnight, wasn’t” at either place. He was one of the guys up stringing wires through the new addition while one of his emt ployees did the supervising from below

AND THAT, say people who know him, is typical. Every since he -opened his store to “be my own boss” ‘ he's been manager, buyer, ‘extra butcher, check-out elerk, carpenter. janitor. produce handler and handy man. The only thing he never does is to put his
. coat on and sit back in his office with his feet on a" the desk. And that's mainly because he hasn't had ie te “time to uncrate the office furniture Gp f “Galyan’s Super Market” has exceeded even the 4 { ; fondest hopes of Al GAlyan. ager. He was still holding his breath three years later when he'd saved enough to build a 100 by 40 building. He had a little more confidence six months later when his volume of trade had- fiereased so much he had to build a 26 by 40 warchouse and expand the original store to a total floor space of 80 by 126, Like Topsy, his store “just growed” and it's still growing. Most men who pull themself up from a delivery boy job to the ownership of a large metropolitan store would have a “success” story to tell. Al Galyan, bowever, has a “failure” story.
ALBERT (AL) GALYAN—His success story ks Js a story of failures.

He started ‘wor kifig in a grocery in his hometown of Bloomington back in 1926. He was 12 years old. He worked for Grocer Roy Burns all through grade high school and won a job as anager . of 4th and Rogers St. store when he was 19. “That was the big thing in my life,” he recalls, “, had wanted to manage a store but Mr. Burns insisted | I keep going to school. Then he made me manager 2 so I dropped out of the university.” The fever to have his own store Kept growing. however. So a couple year later Mr. Burns, owner of a chain of 15 groceries, did an unusual thing—he Set a competitor up in business by helping Al start his own §tore. © That was the first failure for his store folded just ‘about a year later. He, like many other grocers, hadn't learned that selling food on credit ahd the depression didn’t mix :
