[ Tells of Quarrel
~ Stimson Bares, Rift on War Strategy
With Churchill
| WASHINGTON; Dec. 26 (UP)—| {Former Secretary of War Henry L. {Stimson revealed today that U. 8. and British leaders fought bitterly among themselves over Allied wartime strategy. In the first installment of his book On Active Bervice,” Mr. Stimson relates how he quarreled with Winston Churchill land other British leaders who opposed a “second front” in Western Europe, He sald even President bi : Roosevelt had to Mr. Sturm | be persuaded that ! the Allies’ best move would be an invasion of Normandy. Though the former secretary emphasizes that these strategy disputes were merely the “quarrels of brothers,” they octupy a consider-, able part of the first installment | of his memoirs which ‘appear in| the January Ladies Home Journal The book is in the form of a third-person blograplly in which Mr. Stimson shares authorship with Mac George Bunday of Harvard University { Fine Key Points The wartime civilian head of the Army also reveals that ONE: He felt President Truman | was “undercutting” the efforts of Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell in China and siding with Air Force officer who disliked “Vinegar Joe.” TWO: He and Gen. George C Marshall, then Army chief of staff doubted the wisdom of the North African invasion in 1942, but were overruled. THREE: He backed Gen. Marshall for the job of Supreme Allied commander in Europe and was ‘staggered when it went to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower. However, he later admitted the soundness of the choice. FOUR: He tried without succes to bring about closer co-operation between President Roosevelt and Gen, Charles De Gaulle FIVE: He considered the Russians “magnificent allies,” who “fought as they promised and made no separate peace.” Praises Roosevelt Despite his frequent differences with Mr. Roosevelt, the secretary acknowledges that “as a wartime leader (hej proved himself as good] as one man could be.” He lauded the late President's vision during} war crisis as “vigorous and quick and clear.” Mr, Stimson also has words of praise for Mr. Churchill.” “With the single exception of Franklin Roosevelt,” he said, “no man in any country had been a greater factor than Mr. Chirchill In the construction of the grand alliance that destroyed the Nazis .
