AN ARTISTIC and spiritual contribution to the atmosphere of the Christmas season is made each year to the city of Muncie by the 9B and 9A art students of the McKinley Junior High School. Since 1938 Mrs. Bertha Conelley, art Instructor; has directed her pupils in creating elaborate transparencies for the cathedral-like window
of the North Walnut Street institu plete to Muncie and the McKinley | — ninth graders without their Na--tivity window. About the first of November the Initial steps are taken in the creation of this worshipful and artistic tradition. On a huge piece of kraft paper, nine feet wide and 25 feet long, the students and teacher lay out the selectéd céntral scene and border design. WITH the first draft completed the pupils sre assigned pietes "of engineering paper on which they ink-in, on both sides, the black lines of the portions that will later be fitted into the 131 sections of the window,
With the inking-in completed the
coloring begins. Wax crayons are used, and the application is then rubbed with paper toweling till the blanding is perfectly true. Not only must these divisions fit ato the 131 sections of the window, they must conform in tone, each! with the others, to the satisfaction of the student critics.

Directing] the work this year were Margaret Threet, Raymond Dock, Marjorie Hampton, Martha Harthan, Janet Heaton and Leonard Compton. The great McKinley Schoo! window is not only a tradition, it is a religion, spreading the spirit of the Christ Child from early November till early January. From Charles Hampton, the principal, to Ephus Klugh, the custodian, THE WINDOW is a thing of dreams, of ambitions and of school pride, : x ~ »
IT HAS been estimated that pupils have done more than a thou sand hours of work on this year's! window. More than five hundred |boys and girls have labored joyfully through thé past nine years to create these transparencies. | The window may bé seen trom
