Swiss People Are Slow To Change

Interest Is Limited In Vote for Women By ELEANOR ROOSEVELT GENEVA, Switzerland, Dec. 11 I had a meeting the other evening with some of the government officlals of Geneva canton-—M. Casal, president of the council of state, M Pugin, vice president of the councll of state; M. Traina, head of the department of commerce and industry, and M. De Semarclems, head of the department of the interior and agriculture and of the military department, It was most interesting, as each official represented a different political group. One represented the Christian Democratic Workers Association; another, the Socialists; a third was a Conservative, representing agriculture—which seemed quite to conform with our own pattern; and the fourth was a member of the Radical Party, which seems to be not at all radical from our point of view, but a rather conservative democratic group " ” ”

1 ASKED for this opportunity of talking over various Swiss condi-

tions because it seemed foolish to be in Switzerland and not learn something about the life of the ‘people —.and my opportunities for going around and seeing for myself are certainly limited. This is a very small country, and-one has the feel- |

ing that. while its problem in minla-

ture don't vary greatly from our own problems. there should be greater ease in solving them. The

laboratory is small. However, 8witgerland is a federation. The greatest

number of people are GermanSwiss, with the French and Italians also represented. It is interesting to note that In this freedom-loving democracy, perhaps the oldest democracy in the world, traditions are very closely

adhered to and changes are difficult to bring about, For instance, while there is a small, very active group of women attempting to achieve

_ woman suffrage, L-doubt very much y~

whether there is a real desire on the part of the majority of women to bring ‘about this change. Recently, a vote. was taken in Zurich and woman suffrage was defeated. The women seem active, however, in their organizations, both civic end charitable, and I've never known 80 many to possess learned titles. It seems to me that almost other woman who has asked

Make your Christmas tree a

clusters, oranges, pears, apples and: nuts will be both admired and eaten, ‘

By mixing a little imagination in with your evergreens-—such as trimming a tree with fruit and tying it ‘to branches with gay ribe bon bows—you can achieve more heart-warming effects with your home decorations. To make vour task easier, Jack Kelly, Manhattan florist whose clever effects shout Merry Christ mas inside and outside of many imposing homes, offers suggestions ' He says to put your tree in a small painted bucket or tub which can be moved from room to room during the holidays. ~ ” » HAVE YOU a fireplace? If you have or haven't, here's how to concoct a wreath which decorates a mantel or door or hangs in a indow, Using a wire hoop, scaled to fit “the space you want to fill, make a wreath of evergreens, and decorate with pine cones, holly twigs or bright Christmas balls, Inside the hoop of greens, place an air-blown life-preserving tube like kids who can't swim use to keep themselves afloat, A candystriped “life-preserver” gives a more Christmassy effect, Secure the tube to the evergreen hoop with holiday ribbon Infenious idea of Jack Kelly's for spreading Christmas cheer is a glant-size evergreen Christmas sock hung on the entrance door, To make one on which callers will pin Christmas messages and cards, when you're not at home, cut a big stocking out of a piece of buckram: Mount. this on cardboard, cut in the same outlines. Cover solidly by wiring or pinning on a flat type of evergreen, Decorate with berries or pine cones
