Flyer Hits Limited Near San Antonio; Rescue Work Hampered by Lack of Roads to Scene
NEW BRAUNFELS, Tex. Dec. 11 (UP)—Fires still burned early today through the wréckage of two Missouri-Kansas- Texas railroad passenger. trains which collided headon late last night, killing at least two crewmen and seriously injuring. five others, At least two other persons missing among the overturned and flaming engines, tenders and cars (In Dallas, Katy officials ldentified the missing as Engineer R. O. Calloway of the southbound train and a porter, Will Maney, of the northbound crew, The company sald it expected to have the line open for traffic by mid-afternoon.) Sheriff W. A. Scholl of’ Comal County called out the local Nation. al Guard company early today to guard tons of mail and express shipments saved from the flames.
Train Heavily Guarded
were
Twenty police officers under Capt. J. G. Dunaway arrived to help guard the trains, Sheriff Scholl said the wreek pe curred about 11:40 p. m. when the “Katie Flyer" headed north out-of 8an Antonio, ploughed head-on into the "Katie Limited” 10 miles south of here and 20 miles.north of San Antonio Fire broke out among the coaches immediately after the wreck. Pive of the 10 cars on the fiver were demolished and three of the 11 cars on the other train were wrecked. ™
Roads Slow Rescue
Ambulances fire equipment and police raced to the scene from here and from San Antonio A lack of roads into the isolated area slowed their arrival and firemen were hampered by a water shortage Most of the water used to fight the blaze among the coaches had to
be trucked in by booster tank trucks from nearby ranches. Sheriff Scholl sald all of the
dead. Injured and missing were crew members Three passengers also were injured slightly but were released from the hospital after receiving ald. Sherifl Scholl sald he had "a pretty good idea of how the wreck occurred” but did not care to discuss it publicly as yet. He said the trains were running at “‘sched-
uled speed” but did not know-ex-actly ‘how fast the schedule was for the section whére the wreck took plate. A passenger on the southbound train, H. E. Neilsen of S8an Antonio, «aid “the engineer of my train wus really pouring the coal to her just before the accident.” “We were barreling along at a terrific clip.” he said “Suddenly [ felt the brakes go on and pitched forward in my seat Then came the crash -and everything was confusion from then on.” The two trains collided on a straight stretch of the M-K-T main line between here and San Antonio. The stretch has no block gnals and trains operate on orders picked up at stations along the way The sheriff identified the dead as George W. Steinthorpe, S8an Antonio, a car man on one train, and Jack ‘B. Coleman, 32, Waco, Tex., a fireman The List of Injured Seriously injured were Chesser, Waco, fireman
