Youth, 19, Shot To Death In

Bartender Charged With Murder

A 19-year-old youth was dead to- - |day of a bullet fired in an East Side tavern, the latest victim of violence in an area where police recently began a drive to stop widespread knife

The youth, Charles Smith, of 1218 E. 16th St., was shot fatally Satur‘day by a bartender of the Sixteenth | Street Tavern, 1416 E, 16th St, who pumped five shots at his victim, police were told. The bartender, William Bush, 25 of 919 E. 16th St., and Smith argued violently before the employee pulled a pistol and fired the fatal shots,| witnesses told homicide detectives. Charged With Murder Bush was arraigned in Municipal Court 4 this morning and charged with murder, pending a grand, jury investigation, | Police were told that the victim also was carrying a pistol and had been in the tavern with another, 19-year-old youth, Willie Appleton, 2004 Yandes St. Appleton and the dead youth's father, Rufus Smith, | both . were charged with vagrancy. The argument began when ‘Appleton took a glass outside the tavern. Bush went outside to recover it and argued with Appleton. Later the argument wads . continued by

Discovers He's Wounded In a shooting affray yesterday, Charles Dougherty, 49, of 2058 N. Illinois St., was wounded slightly. He was sent to the General Hospital from the city prison this morning after he found two slugs in his leg. The admitted assailant was Floyd! Wiggs. 49, of 1422 S. Richland St. who charged that Dougherty made insulting remarks to his children. Wiggs told police he shot Dougherty on the sidewalk in the 1700 block of Howard St. Dougherty, wrested the gun away from him, knocked him down and kicked him. in the face, he pdded. He was in General Hospital, charged with vagrancy, drunkenness and violation of the 1935 firearms act. | - Dougherty was charged ‘with va-| !grancy and drunkenness. Boy, 15, Wounded A 15-year-old boy was in General {Hospital after being shot in the leg last night by Preston Adams, 23, of 11217 8. Dakota St, who admitted firing at the victim on the belief the boy was a burglar. ! Adams told police he saw the boy stagginlg in the rear of Wimer's IR staurant, 577 W. Morris St. He [said someone had reported to him that the establishment wa sbeing | burglarized. He obtained a shotgun! {and returned to fire at the boy.
