Survey Shows Total
6.06 Per Cent Increase
NEW YORK, Dec. 3 (UP)~—Col-
fege football, despite slight in-|
creases in admission prices, drew
"more people this sehson than ever
defore. A United Press survey of the home game attendance of 82 major colleges in all sections of the coun-
try showed that they drew a total|
of 11477821 admissions in 1947 against 10,822273 in 1946, an increase of 655,548, or 6.06 per cent. That increase was obtained despite the fact that they played only a total of 410 home games this year as compared with 413 last season. All sections of the country excheb the Far West showed increases ~Jast year's all-time record attendante and when more than 100, 000 person tle in Memorial Coliseum at Los Angeles Saturday to see Notre Dame and Southern California clash, the Pacific Coast, too, will exceed its 1946 college football attendance figures. Big Increase The Rocky Mountain region had the biggest increase, 24.74 per cent, followed by the East with an up of 12.05 per cent. The Midwest, led by the Western Conference h played to an all-time high of 2,751,661 in its 54 league games, drew 5.5 per cent more fans than last year; the South 3.59 per cent, and the Southwest 2.77 per cent. The Far West showed a, decrease of 155 per cent, but that will be more than wiped off the books by Saturday's big crowd at Los Angeles. Only 26 of the 82 colleges reported smaller attendance figures than last year. The Midwest led with declines, eight—Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Northwestern, Michigan State, Oklahoma and Tulsa. The South had seven—Auburn, Tennessee, South Carolina, Louisiana State, Georgia and North Carolina State and Tulane. There were only four drops among the 20 colleges surveyed in the East—Holy Cross, Brown, Pennsylvania and Temple, The other declines were Methodist, Texas and Rice in the| Southwest; Oregon State and U.CL.A, and Washington State, in the Far West, and Colorado in the Rocky Mountains.
