Baffled Only | By Cooking Television Careerist Heads Technical Unit ‘By KAY SHERWOOD
NEA Staff Writer NEW YORK; Nov. 20—Behind the
peep-show magic of a television set is a young woman--slim, auburnhaired Irene Valana-—whose success story forecasts exciting careers for other advénturesome misses in this highly technical and predominantly masculine fiéld,,. As supervisor of‘ the five tele‘vision assembly lines at U. 8. Television Company, Irene directs 100 skilled employees—half of them men ~in the complicated production of the sets She can peer into the forest of wires, tubest, resistors, ‘condensers that make up a combination radiotelevision unit with the xnowing familiarity of a housewife reviewing the contents of her kitchen (cabinet. If one of the litecaily hundreds of delicate wiring installations is incorrect. Irene spots it fast.
» » » YET the 25-year-old girl from Nesquehoning, Pa, has had no Ispecial training in electrical lengineering. Her graduation from
high school ended her formal
schooling. “I like to figure »ut comnplicated things. I learned how to wire electrical equipment iast. I think it's fascinating,” explains tne pretty supervisor. : Irene was introduced to the complexities of gplectrical wiring on a wartime assembly line. When she shifted jobs to go on U. 8. Tele|vision’s assembly line, she searched out -the engineers and cross-ques-tioned them on the problems of constructing television sets. Engineers were so impressed with “her skill and quick grasp of the problem that she clambered quickly up from line 1 job to supervisor. Marriage to an ex-Army lieutenant interrupted post-war plans to| {attend radio school. Now she real- | {Zés she would have to attend clec[trical engineering school to climb |farther. “But I'd rather raise a family,” she says. f
» ” ~ ON THE job, Irene has encountered plenty of surprise from male assembly line workers at the idea! of a feminihe supervisor. “None has ever been antagonistic. We all get along fine. They don't quit on me. That's the proof, I |{think, that they don't resent me.” The petite supervisor who taps {up and down the assembly line on spike heels, often with a house-| wifey apron tied over her blouse and | skirt, has a simple theory for harmonious labor relations. “I treat my co-workers just the| way I like to be treated. You can't | keep a person buried in work. We, turn out our quota—16 to 18 sets lin eight hours--but I don't aver: | {load tMe lines with work demands. {I don't high-pressure them and I don't ride herd on them.” | As a housewife, Irene loves to clean, to arrange and rearrange
