Footwear Should Be 'Reconditioned’. After Encountering Wet Weather
SHOES OFTEN SUFFER from wet weather. Once soaked, they | never look as well or fit as comfortably unless they are properly dried
and cared for afterward. Take off wet shoes as soon as
Agriculture Department advise. Leather is weak when wet. Wearing wet shoes may pull them out of shape and cause breaks
or other damage. Stuff shoes with
Jake up moisture, Never use tension shoe trees because they may stretch the leather out of shape. “~ Instead of drying the outside of shoes by rubbing, which may roughen the leather, pat with a soft cloth. When the inside moisgure is absorbed, remove the stuffing and let shoes dry slowly away from heat. Fast drying with heat makes leather shrink, harden or crack. As shoes dry, clean with saddle soap. Then with the hands rub in a little sulfonated castor oil, obtainable at drug stores. It keeps leather soft and pliable. Use only as much oil as the leather will absorb. Otherwise, the shoes will be too greasy to take a polish. When shoes are soft and dry, polish with any good paste or cream. Two goats of polish may be needed to bring back the fresh new look to the leather. Oiling Extends the Life Of Work or Play Shoes Work or play shoes that do not need polishing may be softened and made to resist moisture by ‘rubbing them with beeswax, talJow, wool grease or petroleum jelly. Well-oiled shoes not only turn off moisture but also last longer. Outdoor work shoes or chil- . dren’s shoes which have hardened after getting wet may be softened by rubbing with warm—not hot ~neat’s-foot ofl, castor oil or tallow. To make leather soles moistureresistant, set shoes in a pan of Just enough warm oil to cover the soles and let stand about 15 minutes. (Never let oil get on rubber heels or soles because it rots rubber.)
Prevention Is Better
Than Post-Shower Care Suede shoes should be thoroughly dry before they are prashed or rubbed. Use a rubber’ sponge or stiff brush—never a wire brush because it may damage soft suede. After brushing, spread on liquid suede dressing in one direction. ‘When dry, brush in opposite direction to lift the nap. If further treatment is needed to restore the

[Look for Label On Slips
IF YOUR NEW rayon costume slip emerges from its first dunking as short as a chemise, know your stuff and look for a label on the next one you buy. The label will say in effect that washtub behavior is under better control. Control is another word for the stabilizing processes given to certain rayon fabrics to make them shrink-resistant. This means that garments will shrink less than 2 per cent in washing or cleaning. * #8 WHEN YOU buy a silk slip, a pure silk is a better investment than a weighted silk. A weighted silk slip wears down quicker than pure silk if there's friction against a dress or a foundation garment. Weighted silk is less able to stand up to stitching than pure silk. Be wary of excessive sizing in the silk or rayon slip that you buy. Starch-like sizing is likely to come out in the wash.
Sometimes there are tags on garments which indicate the quality of fabrics. These are good guides that will keep you from taking home a crisp slip that may go limp after sizing is washed out.
