«Dear Mrs. Manners: , ~~ MY PROBLEM will always exist andi is one from which many jokes aré born. For 16. years of married life the| mother-in-law jokes. have bored me. I married an only son whose mother became wery unhappy because he married. She has two daughters. My
husband and the unmarried daughter are supporting their mother and our being married has not cut off one cent of my husband's support money. For the last three years the mother has not spoken to me or been a guest in our home. She is living out of the state with the unmarried Gi daughter, She has written my husband inviting us to their home for Thanksgiving. She stated about wondering if I would come if the daughter wrote inviting me. My answer to my husband concerning the visit has been “no.” My reason—I believe if my mother-in-law really cares for my company and » really wants to be friendly and kind that she herself would write me, personally extending the invitation, Am I in my judgement of answer? PEARL 0. D,, City. You received but half an invitation. However, the snub and pouting aren’t as important, or as warming, as winning your husband's approval. Accept, if you feel that your husband won't be hypnotized _by his relatives and exclude you. . Make atonement if you've wronged your mother-in-law, Graciously invite her to your home. You'll have a clear conscience If you are friendly. You may have acted congenial and sent her money—but did you act grudgingly? Doesn't winning friendships challenge’ you? Your - mother-in-law may never, be glad that she lost a son in marriage : but she might rejoice that she gained a daughter—and a friend.

CAN YOU PLEASE tell me where I might locate an album of recordings—the musical score by Victor Young of “For Whom the Bell
Tolls?” . —Q Fa I have seen it where I attended college but have been unsuccessful Ro er in trying to buy it in this city, 0, 8. B,, City. Asks About Virginia Marriage Laws MY DAUGHTER wants to go to Virginia to be married. We are wondering about parents’ consent as she is only 19 years of age. She would be accompanied by her brother and sister who are 23 and 21. Could the brother give his consent or does she have to be 21 years of - age to marry without our consent? Does Virginia require blood tests and a waiting period of three days as some states do? MRS. E. E, City. With parents’ consent the male must be 18 years old and the girl, +16, according to Virginia laws, listed in the 1947 World Almanac: ~ Without consent each must be 21 years old. Your daughter should take along a written affidavit giving your consent, A blood test, but no waiting period, is required.
Excuse Me? Or—Beg Your Pardon?
OUR HOUSE-MOTHER in college was very definite about the use of “I beg your pardon” and “excuse me.” I'd like your view. E., City. College English professors indicate that the difference is an etiquette distinction. Authorities on manners suggest “I beg your pardon” for real awkwardness such as tripping over someone’s feet in a movie, “Excuse me” is suggested when passing in front of & person, and “I'm sorry” for slight awkwardness. Persons wishing to leave dinner early or refusing an invitation should say, “Will you excise me?”
Wonders About Gross Income Tax Refund 4
SEVERAL of my business friends have received notice from Gross + Income Tax Division or refunds and no one is capable of explaining reason for such. The nearest explanation I can gather is in 1944 and 1945 gross income tax was not deductible from federal income tax. In 1045 a law passed making such permissible. -Please inform me as to whom one can write to know about the matter or do you know the law and reason for this? Like my friends I am a small business man and I wonder about such a problem and if law is true why haven't all small business houses received some attention or is it just a matter which concerns my friends’ types of business. MR. M. M. O., Kokomo. Any notification from the Indiana Gross Income Tax Division would not be based on deduction or computation of federal tax. It i : could be based on duplication of tax payment or failure to take *
