Most persons who are vaccinated with such vaccine do not contrict influenza if exposed in the next few months. Protection against influenza develops about two weeks after inoculation. Immunity goes down to

about two-thirds strength in the|-

next four to five months and to about half strength in a year. In some persons the loss of protection occurs more rapidly. Because of the relatively short immunity which it affords, Health authorities recommend its use just before a probable outbreak of tne disease, ¥ ” » GENERAL use of vaccination against influenza is not necessary. Some older individuals, those who are not well, key persons in important positions, and university or boarding school students might take the vaccine. Even though the influenza rate in young children is high, it is not a serious infection and if proper care and facilities are available, vaccination could be omitted, When should vaccination be done? Health authorities could wait until the appearance of an epidemic in another section of the country. Disease takes about two months to spread from coast to coast. This would give them time to vaccinate when it would do the most good. Influenza is a specific highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract. It has a sudden onset, and the patient complains of fever, chilliness, sore throat, cough and weakness. The disease spreads in epidemic waves.
