The Doctor Says—

Shots for ‘Flu’ Should Be Understood

By WILLIAM A. O'BRIEN, M. D. INFLUENZA vaccination does not protect against the common cold or other respiratory infections. Most persons who are vaccinated with such vaccine do not contrict influenza if exposed in the next few months. Protection against influenza develops about two weeks after inoculation. Immunity goes down to

about two-thirds strength in the|-

next four to five months and to about half strength in a year. In some persons the loss of protection occurs more rapidly. Because of the relatively short immunity which it affords, Health authorities recommend its use just before a probable outbreak of tne disease, ¥ ” » GENERAL use of vaccination against influenza is not necessary. Some older individuals, those who are not well, key persons in important positions, and university or boarding school students might take the vaccine. Even though the influenza rate in young children is high, it is not a serious infection and if proper care and facilities are available, vaccination could be omitted, When should vaccination be done? Health authorities could wait until the appearance of an epidemic in another section of the country. Disease takes about two months to spread from coast to coast. This would give them time to vaccinate when it would do the most good. Influenza is a specific highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract. It has a sudden onset, and the patient complains of fever, chilliness, sore throat, cough and weakness. The disease spreads in epidemic waves.

a fot from Japanese girls when it comes to pleasing men, says Ernest Hoberecht, United Press ‘ correspondent and author of Japan’s bestseller, “Tokyo Romance.” To support his stand, the writer says he knows around 900 Americans who have takep 3 Be Japanese wives. g » They are all Ruth Millett extremely satisfied, and wouldn't exchange for a state-side counterpart. . What's so wonderful about the Japanese woman as & homemaker? Mr, Hoberecht says she greets her husband at the door with his slippers, then hands him his evening newspaper and a cocktail. If he wants to talk she sits down and talks. Otherwise she scrams out to the kitchen without a word. oh 8 ® = DURING the evening she knows just when to bring him a fresh can of beer, and, if he sits up until 3 in the morning, she waits around on the chance that he might like a befdre-bedtime snack. It has taken American women too long a time to step out of the role of the inferior little woman and to dignify the job of wife, by giving it the standing of a real partnership, for them to attempt to copy the Japanese wives. They: certainly aren't interested in going back to the slipperfetching role. Any man who is looking for the Jap-type of wife Mr. Hoberecht describes can probably find one—by calling up the nearest domestic employment agency.
