Hit ‘New High’ In Offensive Football

CHICAGO, Oct. 22—Paced by the undefeated teams of Michigan and Illinois, Big Nine squads have hit a! new high in “offensive football” in the nine conference games played to date this season, official statistics| showed today. As well as scoring more points, | Western Conference teams are, ; gaining more yards on the ground; .. and in the air, plus completing more passes. Generally, Big Nine teams are operating at a faster tempo in every offensive phase of the game than at any previous time during the “modern era” of Western Conference football, starting with the 1939 season. With high passing percentages and long runs dominating, Big Nine teams are averaging 22.2 points per game, far ahead of the 1939-46 average and well over the peak mark of 17.5 per game in 1943. Attempt More Passes Running attacks are chewing off yardage at an average of 222.3 yards per game, which is well over the peak mark of 200 set in 1944, Passes are averaging 94.8 yards, which blankets the “modern-era” peak set last year at 85.9. Another interesting trend, stemming from outstanding quarter-| backs in the T-formation, is the fact that Big Nine teams are attempting an average of 13.3 passes per game, less than several of the
