BY NO STRETCH of the imagination can Johnny Mowers be terfhéd a Hoosier. So the tifle “Hoosier Profile” is something of a misnomer, But Johnny has a couple of,-typical Hoosier problems. Alm No. 1s to land the Indianapolis Capitals into Aa playoff berth in the American Hockey League. Thousands of Indianapolis fans will go along with him on that one. Problem No. 2 is to find a place to live tor Mrs Mowers and 8-month-old Stephanie Tone. This, also, Is the source of considerable worry for a lot of other, home-seeking folk. (As if you didn® know),

Troubles of 17 Other Kids

JOHNNY DROVE into Indianapolis last Monday night with a sackful of worries on his shoulders. He's taking over as the Caps’ coach and as general “caretaker” for a squad of 17 players. Jt is to him that they'll tell their troubles, and these problems will be his, too, He shrugs it off with “what kind of a guy I be if I didn't go along with the kids.” The truth is that he's barely more than a himself. Like most hockey They're listed in the record books at such-and-such an age, but most of them managed to cheat a year or so in order to in the game longer. The club owners figure that after a hockey man is over 30 he's on the downgrade, so a lot of them spend a lot of time reaching that ripe old age, Johnny, who was horn at St. David's, Ontario about eight miles north of Niagara Falls, N. Y., will admit, however, that he's in his “early 30s" The oldest player on his squad (hy the record books) is only 27, so Johnny is quite young for a father confessor. He broke into organized hockey in 1939 with the Red Wings and was farmed to an amateur club in the Michigan-Ontario League. He was called back to Detroit in January, 1040, and shipped on down to Omaha to finish the seas 'n as a coaltender

-With Red Wings in 1940-41

MOWERS EXPLAINS that he because he was too little to play any on the club, But that Is hardly the case now around the six-foot mark and weigh neighborhood of 190 pounds hockey players He spent 1940-41 with the rookie-of-the-year award bv Vezina trophy for low only a pair of tounters Mowers later won this coveted award picked on the 1942-43 National League All-Star as the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Alr Force alter that successful season and spent a Mowers went overseas after that but to get In a little hockey playing in England and France He rejoined the Detroit club in Scptember of 1946 following his discharge, but. found himself out of a goal tending job. Harry Lumley had been brought up from the Caps and was a fixture. Mowers served as Lumley's understudy but was put on shelf
