Need Stressed | For Policeman: At Crossing

Kentucky Ave. Area Held Danger Spot |

By LOUIS ARMSTRONG | § ‘ South Side residents today were wondering when rolice were going to turn their attention to the trafic problems in that area./ As this reporter and John Spicklemire, Times staff photographer, toured the section south of Wash ington St. between West and ‘East Sts. it" was the general feeling § among persons living and working there that they are being neglected. What appears to be the “granddaddy” of all Indianapolis congested corners is where Kentucky Ave. West St. and South St. intersect.| The traffic lights should be turned out during rush hours and control of the intersection given to a police} officer. | Heavy Traffic Volume For sheer volume and variety of traffic, this survey party has seen nothing to equal the busy South Side corner. The light would turn green for 80 seconds, then red for 45 seconds. A _gount of the flow showed an average of 12 cars got through each time the light turned green. At 4:50 the traffic became slightly lighter so we pulled out for West and Morris. Sts. There, long lines of cars stretched to east and west. At Madison Ave, intersection was another jam. Motorists attempting to make left turns blocked the street. After a minute's wait we got up to Madison Ave. and made a right turn. Traffic was moving smoothly beyond the intersection. Over on the wide smooth lanes of 8. East St. there were few cars. But at the intersection of East St, Virginia Ave. and South St. was another jam. Here trolley cars added to the congestion. It took us three minutes to get through the intersection and traffic was past its peak at that time. By 5:25 the rush was over in the area as motorists fanned out in their neighborhood sections, sections,

The officials said they decided to withdraw their objections to location of the hospital on ground adjacent to the Indiana Univerversity Medical Center after a| meeting with Harold E. Morris, indiana Department Commander. | Thé 11th District had opposed the site because they said it would cost more to erect ‘a hospital there than to build an addition to the VA hospital Joeated on Cold Spring Rd.

In a slatemant, the Legion group said: “It was.found-that the appropriation for this new hospital was based on the policy of establishing hospitals near medical centers and a reverse action on the part of the Legion might -delay the medical and hospital services to the veteran. “It is recognized that some of the Legion minds are not in accord! with the VA policy, but they thaught. ft best not td. jeopardize erection] of a hospital so badly needed at! the present time.” or
