Bricklayer Surrenders In Shooting Of Brother-in-Law
Employers Agree To Pledge Loyalty ~~."
‘Corporal Shot In Family Argument
Victim on Furlough From Hospital Alfred Horsley, 37-year-old bricklayer sought for shooting his broth-er-in-law. Saturday, surrendered to police today and was charged with shooting with attempt to kill, In a statement, he admitted shooting Cpl. Harold Howell, 1625 Carrollton ave, who had identified Horsley as his assailant. Horsley gave himself up at police headquarters after making arrangements for surrendering earlier today. Meanwhile, Cpl.” Howell is in critical condition in General Hospital from - bullet wounds in the abdomen and leg. Followed Family Argument According to an account of the shooting by Mrs. Violet Horsley, wife-of the accused man and sisier of the victim, the shooting followed a heated family argument at the curb of the Howell home. Police 1d Mrs. Horsley had quoted her 7usband as saying, as he drove away from the scene, that he had "shot into the air.” Cpl. Howell, who was on furlough from an army hospital in Michigan where he had been a patient, narrowly missed complications from another quarter when the ambulance rushing him to the hospital | collided with another car and turned over. A young ambulance physician, Dr. William D. Carnes, was credited with preventing fur-| ther injury to the wounded man by| cradling him in his arms as the] ambulance rolled over on its side. Driver of the vehicle which] struck the ambulance was John! Powers, R. R. 6, Southport, who| was charged with failure -to give right-of-way to an emergency vehicle. Drive to Howell Home As reconstructed from “accounts of witnesses, police said, -. the trouble which led to the shooting! started when the -Horsleys drove to the Howell home early Saturday | evening to sifow her parents a tiew| coat. As Horsley parked his car in front of the house, Mrs. Horsley told police, her brother Harold came out and approached them. Cpl. Howell then accused Hors-| ley of threatening to “whip”. him, | Mrs. Horsley told police. A moment later, another brother, Howward, joined the argument, and Horsley drove off. |
