Youth must be served

Indianapolis Looks to Its Youth

Indianapolis schools

total 117 ele-

mentary, vocational and high schools,

including both public and parochial.

The city’s Park Board maintains 42 playgrounds, not including school playgrounds or miscellaneous corner lots. The Recreation Department operates 14 of the 24 youth recreation centers.

Over 7,200 are enrolled in Indianapolis Boy Scout troops, 5,200 in the Girl Scouts, and 2,200 in the Campfire Girls;

"YM" 5,300.

and

“YW” enrollments total

Indianapolis people are proud of the seven high school bands, the News Boys Band, and the two Boy Scout Bands.

A total of 15 summer camps are operated by various groups interested in ‘youth activities. One camp is conducted especially for handicapped children, while another is run as a health camp.

Officials and other personnel of Allison and Chevrolet in Indianapolis have always taken an important part in local youth activities and also do their part as good citizens with financial contri

butions.

Never have people been more coacerned with the wel-

fare of children than in these days, when it appears that

coming generations will need careful preparation for the new problems which they must face.

That is why this city, like other enlightened Ameri. can communities, has taken a new interest in all youth activities which promote basic character, self-respect and self-reliance, initiative, a sense of fair play, clear

- minds and sound bodies.

And that is why the General Motors divisions in this city, like other members of the community, are so interested in the activities of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire Girls, YMCA, YWCA and other youth organizations—are so sympathetic to the efforts of our schools, our churches and the departnients of our city government charged with responsibilities toward our children and young people.

“Youth will be served.” Youth must be served if;

{in turn, it is to serve the interests of a progressive city

—a forward-looking state—a free, productive and happy America.
