Music Cast
In New Role
It's Fashion Dictator, Designer Declares . By ALINE MOSBY nited Press Hollywood Correspondent HOLLYWOOD, Sept. 8. — The| death of swipg music, and not in-| nocent dress designers, is to blame for those droopy skirts hiding the | ladies’ gams, a studio dress designer. said today. { It’s all the fault of those fickle swing musicians who buried hot | swing and dug up sweet tunes and! hip-wriggling rumbas. “What else could skirts do? Women | look much more attrhctive gliding through a waltz, fox-trot or rumba in a long, flowing dress,” M-G-M Designer Helen Rose. Indignant females and mournful males -have screamed that the ankle-kissing skirt is a sinister plot cooked up over a designer's cash register, The longer skirt means a gal gives her duds to the Salvation Army and starts all over again. A horrible lie, snapped Miss Rose. “Why, were innocent. You'd think women had worn short skirts since time began,” she sniffed.
“They came -into fashion only 10{
years ago—the same time hot swing became the craze. “The ladies couldn't bounce around a ballroom, be thrown over someone's shoulder and act une inhibited in longer skirts. So the designers obliged and invented the short skirt.” This was a dandy for the jitterbug era, she pointed out, but that has all but disappeared. down the drain. The swing band leaders are | either disc. jockeys or aspirants to! the movies. “Music is either sweet or Spanish, now. So ladies no longer resemble whirling dervishes on. the dance floor,” said the designer; “They're dressing to suit the new trend in music.” 5
