Diehard Braves Breathing On Cards’ Necks

Half-Game Behind St. Louis
Willard Marshall's 32d Homer Leaves Giants Only One Behind Yanks’ All-Time High
‘NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (U, P.).—
The Cardinals, who have been look-
ing only forward toward first place, were forced to look back over their
shoulders today as the Boston Br
aves made a spirited bid to knock
them out of second place in the National league.
= Third place yawned below the
$0 within a half-game by beating the Phillies last night,
the Cardinals were idle. To add to St. Louis worries, first place grew even more remote as the league-leading+ Brooklyn Dodgers stretched their margin to seven-and-a-half games with a 6 to 3 win over the New York Giants.
Imbued with the diehard spirit ¥
of skipper Billy Southworth, the Braves ripped four Philly pitchers for 17 hits to mark up their fourth win in their last five games. And on the mound, going all the way for his fifth straight victory, was big Bill Voiselle, right-hander who has blossomed into a winner since Southworth got him from the Giants. The Giants could have used Voiselle, or somebody, when the Dodgers blew Dave Koslo and Joe Beggs apart for five runs in the sixth
inning to clinch their game at
Ebbets fleld. Brooklyn had riflin’ Ralph Branca who held the New Yorkers to four hits to register his 19th victory of the season. Climax play of the Dodgers’ big rally was Jackie Robinson's steal of home against Beggs. Giant Highlight Only Giant highlight in their oss, their sixth in seven games at Ebbets field this year, was Willard Marshall's 32d home run in the seventh inning, a wallop that left them only one homer behind the Yankees’ all-time mark of 182 in a single season. The Cubs, Reds and Pirates, as well as the Cards, had "off days” in the National league. Mickey Harris of the American league's Boston Red Sox showed that his recovery from the sore arm that has plagued him all season was. near-complete as he threehitted the Philadelphia A's, 2 to 1. Joe Coleman went all the way for the A's, yielding ohly five hits. Philadelphia’s run came in the seventh on a single by Ferris Fain, a sacri-
fice, and a single by Hank Majeski, |
but the Sox came back with two in the same frame on singles by Bobby Doerr and Birdie Tebbetts and a double by Ed Pellagrini. _ The 3 second- nd-place Sox remained
Red Birds since the Braves pulled 9 to 2, while

12 games behind the Yankees, ow ever, when New York registered a 10-inning, 4-to-3 win over Washington, George McQuinn's long fly bringing Tommy Henrich home from third base with the winning run. Stan Spence drove in all three Senator runs with his 12th and 13th homers, but Bobe Newsom and Joe Page joined to hold Washington to five hits in all, Page getting the victory. Early Wynn, who gave only six hits, went all the way and was the loser. The Detroit Tigers continued to make life miserable for ~ pitcher Ellis Kinder of the St. Louis Browns when they Brownies, 5 to 4. Kinder, knocked out in the sixth inning, suffered his 12th defeat in his last 13 starts. Pitcher Steals Home Fred Hutchinson went all the way

U. S. Davis Cup Hopes Rely on Kramer, Schroeder
NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (U, P.).—The United States put it squarely up to Jack Kramer and Ted Schroeder today to defend the Davis Cup against Australia in the openiog singles matches of the challenge round at Forest Hills with the same two players thiey stunned a year ago to win back the huge silver bowl, Kramer, U. 8. singles champion and No. 1 tennis player in the : world, drew the opening maten against curly-haired Dipny Pails, the 26-year-old Australian champion, Schroeder was paired against John Bromwich, acknowledged ace of the Aussies.
The U. 8. was a strong favorite to retain the cup although the Australians were confident they would complete the first day's play At least with an even break, virtually conceding a victory to Kramer but ‘expecting Bromwich to down Schroeder. Kramer in Peak Form Schroeder drew Bromwich in the opening match at™ Melbourne last December and upset him in five sets. Kramer raced through Pails in three sets and the two Californians -~Kramer is from Los Angeles and Schroeder lives at Glendale—later clinched the cup by winning “the . doubles from Bromwich and aging Adrian Quist. Schroeder's recent form, not quit: up to par, caused U, 8. non-playing captain Alrick Man only slight worry for the 26-year-old star has a trick of lifting his game to an amazing degree when the chips are down. They're down now and none knows, i better than Schroeder,
