DETROIT, Aug. 21 (U, P)~ Nearly 70,000 production workers in the Pontiac, Chevrolet and Fisher body divisions of General Motors corporation faced a week's lay-off today because of. a shortage of steel President C. E. Wilson sald the
last week of this month or the first ‘week of September. Mr. Wilson
said it would be up to plant managers to decide when the ‘plants ! should close. The shutdown wijl cost the nation 25000 Pontiac and Chevrolet! passénger cars and trucks. Mr, Wilson announced the proposed stoppage yesterday and immediately afterward President Wal. ter Reuiher of the C. I. 0, United Auto Workers. union demanded a justice’ department investigation of
what he called the steel Industry's hutdowns would oceur either the “restriction of production.”

P.) ~The defense expected to open
arguments today to disprove charges that Beulah Louise Overell, 18, and her fiance, George (Bud) Gollum, murdered her wealthy parents | Motions to strike testimony against’ Gollum will occupy the first {part of the day. The first defense witnesses will be called Monday | Atforneys said the young couple would take the stand in their own defense at the climax of the case {about three weeks from now They sald Gollum would tell a “straight{forward story” and Miss Overell {would “prove that she had no connection with the crime.” Prosecutor Eugene Williams sald {he was considering reopening the (state's case Monday to introduce {further testimony about the hammer he contends Miss Overell used to beat her mother to death. Otto Jacobs, attorney for Miss Overell, said he would petition the California supreme court to free Miss Overell on grounds that no evidence against her was heard by the grand jury that indicted her The girl's parents, Mr. and Mrs Walter E. Overell, were killed March 15. ‘Their bodies were found aboard their yatht which was blasted by an explosion.
