‘Best Exercise On Hot Days
Is Swimming But There Is Danger In Overdoing It By JANE STAFFORD Science Service Stall Writer SWIMMING is the safest hot weather exercise; the Indiana State Medical association points out. The danger of, overheating is completely eliminated. But there is danger of overdoing In swimming, as in other fqyms of exercise. Many drownings attributed to cramps have really resulted from | the. failure of overtaxed® hearts, the association warns. Don’t swim until you are completely tired out. Exert yourself only to the’ point where your breathing is slightly quicker than usual, is the medical association's | advice. “The advantages of outdoor swimming are many,” an association report states. “The air, the sunshine, the frolic on the beach or by the pool, and the exercise of swimming itself have wholesome effects upon the body."
“HERE 1s a apr that allows display of any amount of energy. Swimming great distances at a fair {speed developd the entire muscular system. At the other extreme, the convalescent may float around the {water exerting very little energy.! {not even having to support his body weight as he would do in |walking. For the most of us moderlate indulgence is by far the best. “Persons suffering from eye. ear or intestinal infections, skin disease or sinus trouble should not frequent the pools and beaches. They are a health hazard to others and, at the same time, run the risk of aggravating, their own conditions. “There are several general rules about ‘swimming which should be observed. It is advisable to wait an hour and a half after eating so the meal will be thoroughly digested before going into the water. If the water is cold, do not stay in until [the body is chilled. Upon leaving the water the bather should put on dry clothing. “Contrary to popular. belief, water in the outer ear produces very few ear infections. However, when the ear drum has been perforated or is destroyed, infected water can very | easily go from the outer ear canal {into the middle ear chamber and s0 produce a middle ear abscess. The main source of ear infections from swimming results from water getting from the back of the nose into the middle ear.”
Recipes May Need Adjusting When Smaller Eggs Are Used
The small pullet eggs, due in price on markets in early fall,
larger eggs in many recipes, cookery scientists of the U. S. agriculture
department say. But they add that eggs, because good results depend the mixture. No change in the number of eggs is necessary in most recipes for waffies, griddle cakes, muffins, plain cakes and cookies. But in custard, where thickness depends on the amount of the egg, more small eggs must be used than larger eggs. In the standard recipe for baked custard calling for three eggs, the number should be increased to four when pullet eggs are used. The light texture of angel food and sponge cake depends on the

Correct Play
Hearts
By WILLIAM E. McKENNEY America’s Card Authority AS 1 HAVE often said, some of the best bridge is played after a tournament is over, when the contestants are sitting around and eating sandwiches. During a discussion of hands after a recent tournament, Sol Mogal of New York brought up today’s hand, which he said he | played eight or 10 years ago. He gave us only the North and | South cards, ‘and .if- you really ! want to work. the hand out, you should cover up the East-West | cards. There were four or five experts around the table when we discussed this hand and none of
them made the correct play, ”
. ” MR. MOGA)L said that he played the 10 of diamonds from dummy on the opening lead, East put on the jack and Mr. Mogal won. He led the spade and fine essed dummy’'s jack which held. Then he cashed the ace of diamonds, led the three of hearts to the queen in his hand, and ruffed the six of diamonds with the seven of hearts. West had played the diamonds in the following order: Seven, five, deuce. ~ Dummy’s 10 of hearts was led to the king, and the ace of hearts cashed. Then declarer led his fourth heart. Having no idea that West was void of clubs, he simply hoped that West had one of the club honors. But West had to lead a spade which was won in dummy with the queen, South discarding a club. Another club was discarded on the ace of spades. This left the dummy with the king-10-nine of clubs, while Mr. Mogal had the nine of diamonds and ace-six of clubs. East found himself squeezed. In order to hold the queen of diamonds, he had_ to blank down to the queen-jack of clubs.
Use Milk on Skin
on a definite proportion- of egg in
ing egg white gives more accurate results with these cakes than egg count. A successful measure for angel food is one cup of egg white to each cup of flour. When eggs are used as a main dish—creamed or scrambied, for ! example—it is obvious that small | eggs will make less than larger | sizes. The rule to remember here | is that seven small eggs give the same weight as six medium eggs.
Style Boycott Is Organized |
ALBANY, Cal, Aug. 20 (U, P.).— A group of several hundred vet-
erans’ wives were pledged today to boycott new dress styles, including long skirts, padded hips and corsets. | Following the lead of a group of Dallas, Tex., women who recently formed the “Little Below the Knees club,” the wives of veterans studying at the nearby University of California -decided to form the WOWS, Women's Organization wl War on Styles, that is. “We'll show _ them ‘(the olisio) | that: we don't like to be pushed
around,” said Mrs. Carrol Reynolds, 21-year-old spokesman lor the group.
“We're just not going to buy those horrible things. If we don't buy them, they're going to have to send | them back to the manufacturers.” More than 200 members were recruited here and in Berkeley within a few hours after the WOWS were launched, she said. Only one or two girls declined and they were on the “dumpy” side.
Redyeing Tous
Before you decide to revive a faded wardrobe favorite with a redyeing job, you'd better consult with the dyer or dry cleaner because some fabrics’ and colors cannot be re-dyed successfully, Here are some of the pitfalls to expect in re-dyeing, as char by the National Association of ers and Cleaners. Temperatures used in the "e-dve. Ing process usually cause some shrinkage. Fabrics to be dyed must! have enough elasticity so that gar- | ments can be stretched back to! original shape. Badly sun-faded “clothes or those weakened by perspiration or de-| odorants may take a dye unevenly. Printed dresses re-dyed to a solid color sometimes have trouble con-! cealing their original designs. In. spite of th® dyer’'s skill, traces of the original design may through the new film of color.
