: Get Trimmed |

But It Is Done Only In a Negative Way

HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 20. — Bulges above a low-cut neckline may get

by on the screen, a top photographer moaned today, but for still pictures he has to trim down the movie queens to measurements a 14-year-old would be ashamed of. On the negative, this 1s, explained Ernest Bachrach, chief photographer at RKO. And it's getting so he hates to gee a voluptuous gal come in for a portrait, (For business reasons, of course.) : “They can be wearing the same dress they wear in the movie,” he sighed, “and filling it the same way. But if I don't erase their curves, the censors'll have a fit.” A movie queen can buy the most expensive cotton curves in town. But when she goes into Mr.-Bach-rach she might as well park ‘em on her dressing table. He'd only have to cut 'em out, anyway. “Sweater girls I have to trim down sometimes as much as two inches,” he walled. “And-aside from the way [it goes against my male appreciation of such things its a lot of work to make those! negatives over.” {

SS Philosophy

‘Chic Must Be Based On Natural Charm’ By MAINBOCHER (Written for United Press) NEW YORK, Aug. 20.-—-I don't { believe in dictated fashions. When some ill-advised person flatteringly asks me, “What will we have to wear next season?” 1 am always very tempted to reply, | “Just enough not to be arrested.” Fashions aren't imposed. They win out on merit and strength.

Barbara Bundschu, United Press fashion writer, is on vacation. In her absence, her column is being written’ by men and women in the fashion fields. Today's guest writer is Mainbocher, dean of American custom dressmakers.

I am just as interested now in the smaller waist and rounded hip as I was eight years ago when I launched in Paris my controversial corset, and the resulting more curved feminine silhouette, But the small waist, much_as-I like it, isn't for everyone in 1947, any more than it was in 1939. How could it-be? A large waist trying to masquerade as a tiny one is just as ludicrous, unhappy and painful as are big feet stuffed into too small shoes and too tight gloves bulging over plump hands. I think the girlish, athletic look has just as much place in the tiny world of fashion as it has in ‘the small world around us. I have tried to use this new fashion freedom not as license, but as liberty, and this liberty has permitted a great variety. There has been only one guiding influ-

Getting Ready Today... for Tomorrow’s Expansion

~ @ A bright future for business in Indiana looms on the horizon. During the past two years, a steady stream of new industries has moved into the territory served by our electric lines. Exhaustive studies point to continuing industrial and community development during the next decade. One important index is the ever increasing demand for electric power. Right today more electricity is being used than during hectic war production days. Industrial Indiana is only beginning to hit its peacetime stride. And it's a healthy stride! It portends a busy future forfindustry and Hoosierdom in general. hat are we doing to meet the vast electric power demands coincident with this mounting wave of active growth?
