Tests Prove Method 80 Per Cent Accurate

OTTAWA, Aug. 14 (U. P.. Short - range, pin ~ point weather’ forecasting with radar instruments | soon: may be feasible in Canada. It successfully by the defense research hoard, are carried to their logical conclusion. a typical, accurate forecast might be as follows: There will be a 20-minute thun- » rderghower at the ball park oné hoiir (rom now. bit: those going to the picnic grounds on the other side of town will not ba affected.” Trace Storm Clouds * Research board scientists have conducted experiments in which adaptations of radar equipment have traced the size, course, depth, speed, and rain density of storm #louds. The tracing is done in much the. same way that radar tracked enemy alrcraft during the war. Shart-range forecasting could supplement the normal long-range forecasts of the dominion weather bureau. Operators of the radar meteorological project at research board headquarters said experiments hdve proved the new method 80 per cent accurate, Radar sets currently in use here| limit the forecasts to about two hours in advance and to a 160-mile radius for each set. A disadvantage still to be overcome is the failure] of the sets to register mist or driszle.
