Recommends State Increase ForestLand
Economic Council Says Need Is Great
The Indiana Economic council today recommended a 20 per cent increase in the state's public and privately owned forest acreage. The recommendation was made in a bulletin set up by the council's advisory committee on forest policy and based on an exhaustive 18months study of the forestry program. The report pointed out that forest products provide a livelihood for 30,000 persons in the state who earn an annual payroll of $45 million, The state now loses five board feet for every thrée grown, the report- said, and while it is not proposed Indiana should become self suffizient in timber production the state needs one acre of new forest for every five acres now in production, Proposing the balance of the cutting drain be partially accomplished by increasing growing efficiency on existing wooded land, the report recommended a three-fold objective for a forest policy: ONE: Increased productivity through sound forest management of Indiana's estimated 4 million acres of privately and publicly owned lands best suited to forests, TWO: Increased efficiency in the utilization of trees and increased

Lekker to Address
Nurserymen Here Prof. Glen Lekker of Purdue university will speak on “Some Bugs You Are Sure to Meet" at the allday meeting today of the Indiana Association of Nurserymen at Efnst Nurseries. About 200 persons are attending. Prof. Lekker's address is scheduled for 1:30 p. m. following a tour through the nurseries and a picnic luncheon. President I. J, Matthews of Gary and J. C. Bunch, Terre Haute, will report the Boston convention of the National Association of Nurserymen, E. O. Little of Auburn and Howard Gaar of Chesterfield will discuss a uniform nursery policy followed by a general forum*“on nursery prob= lems and practices. The meeting will close with a business session and the making of plans for the ‘tonvention here in January.
U. S. Shapes Plan For Loyalty Check
WASHINGTON, Aug. 14 (U.P) The government yesterday whipped into final shape its plans for an $11 million loyalty check on federal em« ployees, The check, ordered by President Truman and approved by congress, begins Monday. Its purpose is td root out disloyal federal workers and those who are sympathetic to subversive groups. P).— The New York Times announced today that beginning tomorrow copies of its city edition will go on sale in the Los Angeles area on the morning of publication. The papers will be placed on an American Airlines plane ledving New York daily at 12:30 a. m. (EDT), arriving in Los Angeles, 3000 miles away, at 7:30 a. m. (PST).
