Coles, assistant curator at the Hayden Planetarium, sald the perseid meteors usually reach their maximum on the night of Aug. 12. But sometimes the maximum may come a day or two later. He said the “shooting stars” should be visible all the rest of this week. The meteors, according to Mr. Coles, becomes visible after they reach the earth's atmosphere, some 90 miles up. As they zoom into the ozone from outer space, they begin to glow as a result of friction. Most of "the meteors disintegrate before they have a chance to hit the earth's surface.
