WASHINGTON, Aug. 11 (U. P.).— The veterans’ administration said today that next month it will begin paying a 20 pef cent increase in non-service-connected pensions tw veterans of the Civil and SpanishAmerican wars, : VA will also pay a similar increase in death compensation to their dependents effective in September. About 113,000 veterans and 05,000 dependents are aflected. The increase, which was voted by the last session of congress, will total about $20 million for the first year and then decline rapidly, VA estimated. Payments now range from less than $15 a month to $100 monthly. They average about $100 for Civil war veterans, $40 for their dependents; $75 for Spanish-American war veterans and $43 for their dependents, In voting the higher rates, congress cited the Increased cost of living and the advanced age of most of the recipients.

Authorities Probe Death of Policeman

LAFAYETTE, Ind. Aug. 11 (U. P.) —Authorities investigated the death of Patrolman Edward E. Farley, 34, today, whose body was found in his parked automobile yesterday, a bullet in his head, Police Chief William Taylor said

suicide. He said he knew the officer had been despondent because of failing health, Mr. Farley died a few hours after he was discovered in his car at the Elks country club and was rushed to St. Elizabeth's hospital.
