Military planes in those days had no rubber life fafts and after several hours of floating around he gave himself up for dead. “I just prayed,” he said: Then, as if by miracle, a ship appeared out of the misty horizon and he was rescued. From that day on Cmdr. Morris has been enthuslastic about life in all its phases, particularly his comforting reaction toward things spiritual, This enthusiasm has been directed mostly during the last 10 years toward activities in the American Legion where he believed he could do the most good for the most people.

Legion Is Chief Hobby

LEGION AFFAIR§ have been his chief hobby aside from his work with the Indiana Bell Telephone Co. at Gary for 27 years, the last 17 of which he has been district chief clerk. } Cmdr. Morris has been known as thg man who has traveled more miles and made mpfe speeches for the Legion than any other Legionnalre in Indiana, And from now on he will travel more miles and make many more speeches for the Legion. The Bell company has given him a leave of absence for one year 80 that he can devote full time to his commandership duties. He has 18 speeches scheduled during the next five weeks in addition to attending the National Legion convention in New York the last of this month. Although Cmdr, Morris has never considered himself -prominent in politics he has been long afMliated with the Republican party. Personally, Cmdr, Morris sald he didn’t consider politics when he became a candidate for Legion office, But his candidacy became involved in politics indirectly before the campaign was over. CHICAGO has had another brutal sex murder of a child. And once again, a “known sex offender” has confessed to the crime. With tragic frequency that phrase—'known sex

offender”—is used to describe a killer. And yet our laws are such that “known sex offenders” are free to wander our streets, drink themselves into insensibility, attack women and children. Not until they kill are they put away for life.

Parley on Sex Crimes

CHICAGO is so aroused over its latest sex killing that its officials are making headlines by promising a conference of judges and psychiatrists to discuss a change in laws governing sex offenders. Says Chicago's mayor: “No time must be lost in trying to keep sex criminals off the streets.”
