U.S. Consulate
Cut Off From Supplies, Mail
‘Don’t Want Us There " Anymore,’ Says Official
By ‘WILLIAM H. NEWTON Scripps-Howard Staff Writer SHANGHAI, Aug- 8.--Russia has
banned United States navy vessels from the Soviet-occupied: Chinese port of Dairen, it was learned today. The Russian decision applies even
to - American naval vessels from]
which all armament has e¢been stripped. It ends an agreement whereby a navy ship with guns removed was permitted by the Soviets. to visit Dairen once a month to carry supplies and diplomatic mail to the U. S. consulate there. In all, five courier trips were made by a navy landing craft, the last trip on March 5. A previous courier vessel, the LCI 1090, was ordered out of Dairen by the Soviets last December when it overstayed its two-day visit by two hours, ® Made, 5 Trips , The Russian ban was accomplished indirectly. In the past it was customary -for Américan consulate authorities to advise Soviet officials that the navy courier was about to leave for Dairen and to get clearance for the vessel from the Soviets. Five such trips were made. By protracted delays, evasions and finally failure to answer later requests for clearance, the Soviets “made it clear that they didn't want us in there any more,” an American official said today.
