Beauties’ Hints— Home Remedies Soothe Sunburn
. For the quickest, soothe your skin with cold cream filmed over the sensitive area, say doctors. The olly coating protects tender skin from nerve-jarring encounters with the air.
Equally good, especially if blispop, are cold wet dressings. These can be made f towels soaked in cold water and laid gently over the protesting flesh.
. - » RELIEF may also be had from a soda paste, made of bicarbonate of soda or plain cooking soda mixed with water. Used to coat the skin with a thin film—and kept moist by wetting as soon as the paste dries—the soda treatment will stop the burning action of the
- smacked surface. One oil-based
lotion which has won followers this summer contains menthol and gum camphor which make a hot skin feel cool and thus minimize the painfulness of the burn.
Reduce Work
Clean, fresh clothes do much toward comfort in hot weather, The children require twice as many play clothes; husbands and sons use more shirts, and mothers and daughters extra dresses, as well as towels, linens and dozens.of other things for the, entire household. With a washér, this job is reduced to a minimum. And in the home where there is an ironer as well, the entire cleanliness problem 1s solved quickly and easily.

She Still Pilots Boats At Age of 78
NEW ORLEANS.—The only woman to hold a pilot's license on the Mississippi river is still going strong at 78. She is Capt. Mary Greene, president of the Greene Line Steamers, Inc. She pilots the last vestige of a romantic river era—the passenger packet. A pilot since 1904, she makes six trips a year from Cincinnati to New Orleans.

Health— ie] Farmer Faces
Many Dangers In His Work
Children Are Among Accident Victims
FARMERS are engaged in one of the most occupations. A
dangerous disabling “accident will strike some farmer in the United States every minute this year, unless extra precautions are taken, the National Safety council estimates on the
of accidents on farms, a clinic survey of farm accident patients showed. Besides the danger of falls on stairs, ladders, scaffolds and ice that city dwellers also face, farmers must prepare to avoid fall. ing off farm equipment, out of the hay mow, off horses and out of trees. Farm machinery came next as cause of accidents. The tractef, the compicker, the corn shredder and the buss saw, in that order, were the worst offenders, = » . J LIVESTOCK accounted for the third largest number of accidents. Although the bull is generally said to be the most dangerous animal Sn the farm, horses accounted for most of the livestock accidents. Ohlldren are often among accident victims on the farm. Many a farmer would not think of allowing his children to be behind the wheel driving a 100-horsepower passenger automobile, yet will allow them to drive a tractor. Children, safety officials warn, have “no more right to be near or on a piece of operating machinery than city children have to be around a punch press or a moving locomotive.” Fire is another danger on the

How to Rebuild Your House: No. 29 Electrical Aids
Modernize With
By PAUL T: HAAGEN Notéd Arehitont
YOU MAY DO much to mod-
ernize your home, if it was built some years ago, by tie use of electrical equipment, J But in order to have this elec trical equipment adequate, it will be necessary to have more base plugs properly located in order to service the appliances. There are many types of base plugs on the market and, like closets, one never has too many of these conveniences. Nothing so adds to comfort and pléasure as adequate light by which to FORE OF SOW or do Any Sher sore of work: An extra outlet may be a time saver too, and the cost is rela. tively small. J x
. " SOME OF the older houses, even those built only 10 years ago, do not have enough outlets because at that time there were not so many electrical appliances as there are today. Be sure to see that there is a well-directed light in the bathroom so one can see clearly from both sides while shaving or Aapplying cosmetics. Electricity takes the drudgery out of today's housework and it is 80 easy to use appliances when there are adequate outlets and base plugs. » . . ELECTRICAL appliances are destined to play an important role in reducing household chores to a minimum of effort, thus more convenience outlets will be necessary. Illumination is an important matter in the kitchen. There should be a ceiling light for general diffusion, a light over the sink, one at the range and possibly under. any wdll cabinets which would throw the light down on the working counter space.
.,» IN PLANNING your kitchen, be sute that there are enough electrical. outlets, especially for the range, the refrigerator and the mixing appliances, irons, ete, You cannot have too many outlets in a modern kitchen. Electrical equipment offers many time savers in the house of today. Many older houses have fallen way behind in elec trical conveniences because “the electrical industry has been forging ahead so rapidly in the last few years that wiring in older homes is entirely inadequate for the needs of modern appliances. Rehabilitation and modernization of your home, electrically, will do a great deal to make it comfortable, convenient and attractive.
CLOSET LIGHTING: Important Art Principles Predominate [n Decorating
MANY INTERESTING principles of art can be discovered in the
designs of wallpapers, rugs, and other furnishings in the home. In walls it is desirable to eliminate the feeling of confining flatness, so wallpapers are designed f{requently with strong perspective, so as to give a *looking through” illusion, Vines, trees, flowers and scenes are placed upon a light background s0 as to create the feeling of depth. Another method to create perspective in wallpaper design is shading. For example, if a vine is represented, the leaves are shown in several degrees of grayness.
» ~ ¥ IN FLOOR coverings, where the eye expects to meet a flat surface, a “looking through” effect is not desirable. For this reason the design of rugs, which the eye sees norizontally, is somewhat different trom the design’ of wallpapers, which are viewed in a vertical position, The floral and geometric designs of Oriental rugs, which have evolved over the centuries, always present a flak surface without perspective, They represent a remarkable degree of perfection decorative art for the use to which they are intended. Another interesting thing about the art of Oriental rugs is their treatment of movement in design. In wallpapers, a tree, vine or other pattern moving upward seems natural, However, if the movement is

What's left of the displaced waist pushes up around the bosom, which is another desirable in the fall fashfon picture. No Bones About One Of the Gadgets The basic waistlet, which fis priced anywhere from $4 to $30, is six to 10° Inches wide. It's constructed of ribbon and lastex, lace and lastex, or all lastex, but in each case it's boned to keep its shape. A few come with lacings, but most hook up the center back or front.
