PAGE 18 Gadgets Give An Old Dress 1947 Look
New Belts ‘Pull In’ For Tiny Waistline
NEW YORK, Aug. 6 (U., P)~—
A dress has as many looks as its belts and its baubles, its scarves and its gloves and -its hats. And if you'll take the accessory manufacturers’ word for it, there's hardly any old dress that can’t be whipped into the mood of the moment with a proper proportion ‘of colorful gadgetry. New tricks in the accessory market displayed at a recent show included a handsome belt series particularly designed to give accent as needed to the season's new smaller-than-natural waistline, The narrow belts, dubbed “many-go-rounds,” were shown in series of two to six to form a corseleted look at the midriff. Their combinations were as varied as the figures they're et to flatter. Some were spaced widely for a complete torso accent. Others were grouped to look as one belt. And the colors permit stripe effects not only in contrasting but in blending tones. One narrow belt was slung around a low hipline, and there's no ban at all on just wearing one slender band around the walst in whatever color seems right for the moment.
New Gloves Display Cuff Links, Jewelry
Other belts ran to Y dmerini width, There was one that carried a full gold kid peplum with it. Another, In silver kid, was handsomely appliqued with green ivy leaves Gloves come in enough colors to match up with the belts, and with ome tricks of their own. A pretty pair of wrist-length gloves sported their own cuff links—gold by day, jeweled or strupg with fabric bows by night The Jewelers fancy a lavish display with waistlength bibs of pearls and beads and long, looped around the throat strands which can be tucked under the belt or dangled from the crooked finger at will. There is considerable combination of metal, pearl and bead in necklaces. Bracelet dangles went modern on grandmother's Tocket with a folding frame for four beaus' pictures, Another sported ‘a silver slate and pencil. “And for an above the ankle dancing dress, the gentlemen see no reason why you shouldn't point up a pretty joint with the same bracelet .you'd wear around -your wrist another day-—preferably - in pairs.
Unimportant Work Before 1890, water color painting was considered unimportant and was used almost entirely in young women's finishing schools,
COYLY KEEPING an eye on “high fashion,” today’s teen"agers are borrowing those trends for their school-day classics, :
to-School” fashion show’ presented at 2:30 p. m. today In Ayres’ auditorium. Thirty models, selected by competition from teen-age groups in . the city, showed the fall versions of young styles. New lengths in all skirts stamped the revealed knee as definitely passe, and there was a subtie hip emphasis that hinted the teensters will be right in the fashion swing. Coats” are practical and lush, too, most of them flaunting hoods for cold days. Velvet lining dressed up one hood, making it adaptable to any occasion. Zip-in- linings fog the yearround coat answer Hoosier. weather problems. As for colors, brown seems good for all-purpose wear, but there are all shades and hugs in most every style,
Plaids Stay in Style
For Back-to-School Going back to school without plaids will be difficult, for some delectable fashions were shown. Electric blue is teaming up with a kelly green this fall for something novel in color combinations —and very nice. That the “gals” are going to wear lots of bright red goes without saying. Sweaters are hugging the walst, either tucked inside the skirt or
caught with a belt. “Horizonhue” colors such as aqua and peach are doubling up In sets
Buits give Miss Teen-Ager the opportunity to go sophisticated There are flattering slim skirts and swashbuckler coats and mammoth pockets give the hip emphasis. Personality is given free rein in the school-age fashion world, however, for there are tailored, feminine and dramatic styles— no need for individuality to be | Jost ! Party-time isn't forgotten and these models showed thé floorlength evening dress in black taffeta and exciting plaid. And for the dramatic personality there was the ballet ‘length frock with a taffeta skirt and Hiboon trim, (By B. 8),
All in One Dish
Summer’s own crispy delight is a luncheon main-dish put on the table pronto in a bowl of ready-to-eat-cereal with cool milk and a sprinkle of sugar. v Refreshingly, fight In texture, actually it's a heavyweight for nutrition since an averagé serving of cereal with milk and sugar contributes top quality protein, the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin), the minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron) and energy, all in a single, thrifty dish!

The tea table, as might be expected, is covered with a lovely linen teacloth. Old Custom Back An old, tustom -of engraving nicknames and date inside the betrothal ring is coming back. Reasons, say jewelers, are that engagements are longer and the new wider mountings for the diamond give more surface,

How to Build: No. 28 Turn the Attic Into a Small
Apartment Or It May Become Recreation Room By PAUL T. HAAGEN . Noted Architect MANY HOMES throughout the United States have unused waste attic space that may be converted to a useful room at little cost if ingenuity and thought are given to the subject. Attics may be converted Into new rooms or even a small apart. ment for rental purposes, thus securing ‘an added revenue to the home owner. The conversion of structurally sound old = singlefamily houses into modern dwelling units for two or more families or for paying guests promises to provide accommodations In the quickest time at the most reasonable cost for housing. To convert an attic to a recreation room, to sleeping rooms or into a small apartment is not hard but it is necessary that certain conditions prevail. \ » " FIRST, there mi be good stairs, not too steep, that wil give access to the attic room and a safe method for .exit ‘n case of fire. 8econd, there must be enough headroom in the attic in which livable quarters may be built, Third, there must be plenty of light and ventilation and this end new dormers may have to be built which will permit
of light, the required ventilation, and a good plan arrangement, Insulation is most important,
for who does not remember the hot, unventilated, uninsulated attics of former days? To Insulate the attic is -reasonably easy today and any good lumber yard or insulation contractor will advise you how it may be successfully done. o » n MANY THINGS may be done with an attic room: Bunks may be built in and thus extra sleeping accommodations -sécured, Bookcases may be installed for storage of books; recreation facilities may be attained. If a bathroom is desired; of course that would "require the - services of a plumber. Naturally, heat will be necessary in the winter,
Most any home needs constant small repairs and replacements as the years roll by and in many cases the home may be greatly improved by such little items that the home owner may do himself, Improvements will not only prolong the life of the house but will increase the morale of the folks living in that home.

Down
FULLER SKIRTS and darker stockings can play down leg faults. The woman who has been mourning the lack of these flattering aids should make the most of them now. Skirts offering the keenest flattery are high-waisted and flare out from the hips. The lowered hemlines which are coming into fashion will also be a boon to women who have winced for years at having less than perfect legs limelighted by short skirts. " » ® THE STOCKING shade most slimming to large legs is a darkish grayed-beige. A woman with leg-size to minimize should shy away from the too-dark shades— black, navy blue or brown, for example—which because they are style-extremes will call atemtion to her faults, Cobwebby sheers offer the ultimate in flattering hosiery. When a woman -needs this Satiery, she should wear exquisite sheers and chalk off the extravagance to figure needs.
