THURSDAY; JULY 81,
Army, Navy Start int Purchases
By Scripps-Howard Newspapers WASHINGTON, July 31, — The armed services have begun to coordinate their buying programs. The ‘new unification law gives Defense Secretary James Forrestal authority to eliminate unnecessary duplication and overlapping in procurement. Actually, however, the army, navy and air force had started a joint purchasing program before the bill left congress. On July 1, the navy’s bureau of supplies and accounts began buying all coal used by the military. Army engineers buy all lumber; the army quartermaster, all food. The navy buys oll-fleld equipment; the army, mining machinery. : No Central Purchasing Textiles ‘now are under study.
bureaus in the arniy, navy and air force will get that job. This will be the general pattern of any procurement policy Mr. ¥Porrestal sets up. : Military men say there will be no central office. Nor will any one get the job of buying for everyone.
