Soviet Pins Faith On Undersea Craft

LEACH Times Kpecinl Writer WASHINGTON, July 31.—Existience of a Russian submarine fleet is having a bearing on future size |and makeup plans of the American navy, which is now being stripped to a shadow of its wartime power. The Soviet Union has between 140 and 200 subs. These include some | of the latest high-speed types the Germans had in service or building at the end of the war, as well as obsolete craft. . How many of these the Russians have in active operation is unknown here. Guesses range up to 40, They are sald to be In training in the Pacific as well as In the Black and Baltic seas. Cite Germany
