Hall of Almond : Yields Car Fuel

NEW YORK, July 30 (U. P).—A| *high-proof brandy of pleasing odor | and flavor,” and alcohol to drive an| automobile can be distilled from the | lowly almond hull, three California scientists disclosed today. | These experts on chemurgy, W, V.| Cruess, John H. Kilbuck and FEr-| nest Hahl, of the University of Cal-| fornia, reported also that their ex-| periments showed the almond hull} can be used to make feed for live-| stock, and is a natural source of | vitamin C, The experiments were carried out | in California, where the almond tree | grows easily. The scientists were able to distill a good grade of “power” alcohol, but | admitted that it could not compete with gasoline unless there was a government subsidy. However, the prospect of getting a | brandy or: alcohol for gin was not | so discouraging, they reported. They | admitted that the internal revenue | regulations and the brandy and) whisky tax might make it an expensive proposition, that is, unless |’ one of the big distilling companies |, took over.
