Sod Saunders of Hartford City, a
popular figure in city and state midget racing circles, died last night
from injuries he received in an acci-|§
dent at Speedrome, Kitley st. and ) U. 8. 52. § The spectacular crash occurred during the first lap of the first semifinal race, and Saunders, an eightyear veteran on the midget ovals, died less than an hour later at St. Francis hospital. He was about 26 years old, married and the father of three children. Funeral arrangements were § to be completed today. The fatal accident came as Saunders drove his Bridges Offenhauser off the backstretch, It skidded into a group of cars, apparently was struck by another car, rode up on} a car in front of him and then turned over several times. GREENCASTLE, Ind. July 30. — Edwin R. Snavely of Martinsville, Ill, former head football coach at the East Stroudsburg (Pa.) State Teachers college, has been named assistant professor of physical education and head football coach at DePauw university for the 1047-48 school year, Wildman announced today. Snavely will. succeed Robert Nipper of Indianapolis. : A graduate of the University of Illinois in 1934, Snavely played for three years on the varsity ‘as a teammate of Ray Eliot, now head coach at Illinos. He received his master of arts degree in 1938 from Columbia. After three years ‘as coach in Illinois high schools, Snavely served two years as director of athletics and physical education and instructor of hygiene at Moravian college, Bethlehem, Pa. In 1939 he became head football coach at the teachers college in East Stroudsburg, Pa., where he is credited with building up strong football
