Air Forces Own Weather for Tests
. AllK inds of Climate Now Made Available | In Special Hangar at Eglin Field, Fla. I By CHARLES CORDDRY, United Press Aviation Writer WASHINGTON, July 22 (U. P).—In Florida today men wearing|, air-conditioned suits are busily manufacturing weather. All kinds of it. They have been told to find out what happens to army air forces \ planes, ground and personal equipment in normal and extreme tem-
peratures.
The AAF grew weary of running off to Alaska for sub-zero testing
conditions or to the Sahara for sweltering heat. It brought these things to Eglin field. Now in full operation, the AAF announced today, is a “climatic hangar” in which can be produced temperatures ranging from minus 70 degrees to plus 165 degrees Fahrenheit. The hangar is 200 by 250 feet, 70 feet high. The men who work in the “$8 million building wear specially :_cooled suits for hot testing and ““electrically heated jobs for cold testing. In the former, cooled air is run through a tube around the legs, arms and through a visor aperture in a hood. The electrical clothing is wired and plugged into a transformer. All-Season Weather In the air proving ground command hangar, all items of air forces equipment are tested “to insure satisfactory functioning . .. in all theaters of operation during all seasons of the year.” °
Here is what can be done:
“Engines (jet and conventional) can be run up and ground tested, weapons fired, bombs dropped, simulated landings and take-offs made to test landing gear struts, brake action checked and the functioning of electrical, hydraulic and heating systems tested.” Human beings can be tested, too, in all climatic conditions, at opérating altitudes and under flight climb conditions.
In the jungle test room, a rain system can simulate 12 inches of rainfall per hour. Material can be infected with molds and fungi. Sun Lamps Used In the desert test room there are sun lamps which will simulate noonday heat under a desert sun, The. cold test room can provide a temperature variation from 95 degrees to minus 70 degrees in 24 hours. The cooling agent is freon. A strato-chamber is used for “physiological proof testing of personnel and personal equipment” at various altitudes and corresponding temperatures. There is the danger that during cold testing hangar doors might freeze tight. So the ‘doors have strip heaters installed around their perimeters and thermostatic switches to give just ough heat to prevent freezing.
