every 10 minutes isn't surprising, or wasn't in July, 1032, Timid last week, the local con-cert-going audience is growing bolder about the weather, Last night, the .crowd of some 6000 elected to sweat out the mid-pro-gram sprinkle and wait for the “Rhapsody in Blue” and the Bennett arrangement of “Porgy vand Bess” music. | A large part of last night's triumph belongs to Dr. Sevitzky. Whether he knows it or not, he has drawn to himself the kind of admiration usually accorded a successful athletic coach. Last night the crowd laughed - appreciatively when the maestro forgot about the mike right back of him and lustily sang his instructions to the orchestra. Chasins Excellent Mr. Chasing repeated his admirable Gershwin performance of last season. Odious or not, comparisons might be tactless. But Mr. Chasins strikes me as the best current performer of the Gershwin “Concerto in F." He even makes the “Rhapsody in Blue” sound new and interesting. He has a composer's sensitivity to musical ideas plus instinctive accuracy. That surefingered digging into the keyboard for tone is something to remember, Dr. Sevitzky and the orchestra started with excerpts from “Strike Up the Band” and “An American in Paris.” The latter composition has vitality apart from its outmoded notes, . Right after iotermission, Dr, Sevitzky invited the audience to sing with the orchestra. He chose the first two verses and choruses of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” In the maestro's Hoosier twang, which Fred Waring kidded in last season’s unforgettable pop concert at the Murat, the title's first two words turned out “Bottle Heem.” Since most of us can't remember any words of Julia Ward Howe's second verse

sive, And the maestro invited his audience to write post-card requests for a number to be sung with the

“ |orchestra Wednesday night, when

Thomas L. Thomas, baritone, will be soloist.

The low price scale, the incomparably good setting—much better than any other summer-eoncert setup you could imagine, certainly miles ahead of New York's Lewisohn stadium, the immense fun of seeing

certs a great success. Most of all, Maestro Sevitzky has great adaptability. People call him a good showman, which he is. He wins his audience, as he did last night with a crowd far bigger than the Indianapolis Symphony orchestra's winter quarters can accommodate. For future summer seasons he needs the entire winter personnel of the Symphony, He can delight everybody with pop concerts. He can also continue building a musical organization that will give Indi-

vantages in concerts and fpstrument teachers. Lanny Ross will be soloist at next Saturday's concert at 8:46 p. m.
